I. What do you like about the lamps?

The great thing about this lamp set is that you get three for a good price. They are fairly easy to assemble and look somewhat refined, being as they are not overly decorative or outlandish. If you are going for something subtle for a quiet setting, these will fit right in. The amount of light these lamps cast is surprising, and I would say that's the best part! This is because the shades themselves are not very dense and are of a light color.

II. Is there anything you don't like about them?

One small nuisance with these lamps is that the shades are easily knocked askew. This is because the shades are held in place by knob-shaped caps. The problem is that each cap is smaller than the metal ring that it screws down into. The effect is that the shade is able to slide out of place just enough to make the passerby tilt their head and say, "That looks crooked."

III. Anything else I should know?

The only suggestion I have is that you may want to look into replacement shades at some point if you want to get rid of the problem of crookedness or if you want to soften lighting. By the way, I got mine for about $150.00. I would not pay more than that for this item. Also, there are other lamp sets of the same brand available with similar designs. I've used a variety of desk lamps in the past, most recently quartz halogen. This provided me with quite a bit of light, but it was also quite hot and the bulb, when it burned out, was not so cheap to replace. This lamp uses three rows of LEDs much cheaper to operate, last much longer (expected life 40,000 hours) as it uses 11 watts and provides several levels of light to use, both in intensity (which is variable with a touch switch) and color temperature (Kelvin). It has an intense white light (6,000 7,000K) for reading and a warmer (4,500 5,500 K) slightly less intense people will prefer one of the other, this unit has them both, plus lower intensity for, say, watching television or merely relaxing. These are all selectable with a reliable and easy to use touch switch system that is also very intuitive and easy to use. "But wait, there's more!" The USB outlet (power only) provides up to 3 more watts to charge your Kindle, Motorola Droid, iWhatever (with the appropriate adapter cord) as well. I purchased 3 foot long USB cords on Amazon (natch!) and now I have two of these lamps on the shelf over our bed we can read in bed, watch TV with lower light, while our Kindles charge.

N.B. This is actually the Diasonic DL-90, so you can also look for that product. The DL-70ISH is similar, but it has a built in iPod / iPhone charger in the base with a small speaker with variable volume. They come with a "wall wart" with replacable plug base that accepts 100 240 volts AC (output 12 VDC) so it is truly global in usability without any voltage transformer as well.

I have to say this is the best lamp I have ever had, and my wife enjoys her. Next stop, another for the desk. It's attractive and stylish as well, but mainly it provides fantastic, easily variable lighting!

This lamp is a little pricey. But the quality and usefulness just blew me away.

This is a fabulous lamp.

Very easy to use ... it has four basic settings and at each one, you can increase or lower the intensity.

I took a chance on it, and was extremely pleased.

My wife liked it and I may have to buy a second one for her ... for a while, I thought she was going to just take this one and then I would have to buy one for myself.

Sorry for being flip, but this is probably the best desk lamp I have ever had.

My mom is pleasantly surprised as she can read for long periods of time without any eyestrain at all. She thought it was just because she was getting older but the types of light available with this product really do make such a big difference.

Setup is a breeze, you unscrew the bottom and screw it back on with the platform in between and you're ready to go. It twists at the base and then you have the vertical adjustment at the top.

Overall the product is very light but the base is stable.

Really a very nice piece of technology, it was a bit pricey but it's one of those, you get what you pay for, cases.

USB port works for charging iphone and the 1-hour feature is a nice touch. Highly recommended.

I was excited enough about this lamp that I would've thought it impossible to exceed my expectations - but it definitely did. Not only is it totally cool in function - someone finally sat down to figure out what LEDs can do that other bulbs cannot - it's just elegant in its simplicity!

Start with the packaging - very reminiscent of getting a new Mac. Even the box it comes in is so elegantly designed and made that you know right away, serious attention has been paid. Assembly takes about two seconds - another elegant piece of design. [Be aware, though, that the plug comes in two pieces, mysteriously - I spent a bit of time trying to figure out how to make the prongs come out the regulation distance, before I realized that there was one more little piece taped into the carton. Once the light dawned, another two seconds.]

The body of the light is gorgeous in its simplicity - it's made of that good, dense, sleek, Italian-looking plastic, and so slender! I'd say it's not even 2" wide, and maybe a half-inch thick. When you're not using it to make light, it folds shut and becomes a sleek little exclamation point. Its base is maybe 8" square, also slim and sleek, and heavy enough to anchor the light in whatever extended, swiveled position you put it in. The controls are like a tiny iPod angled just above the base. The "on" touch-spot is lit when the light is off, so there's no fumbling to turn it on. The four settings are also effortless, as are the arrow spots that increase or decrease brightness within each setting. There is absolutely nothing else to this lamp - it is an exercise in perfect minimalism.

I use it as a bedside lamp - for ambient light in the bedroom after sundown (nightlight setting, dimmed down), plus reading in bed. I have actually taken to ramping down the brightness of the reading setting, because it's more light than I need. From an LED light - amazing! There are three rows of LEDs on the horizontal arm, two cool, one warm, and they crank out the light like crazy in a nice broad area - this is not a stationary flashlight like my LED desk lamp (circa 2009).

I have the feeling that this is the first LED lighting fixture that is based on what LEDs can do, not just on trying to replicate what incandescents and halogens have been doing. This is not just a perfect lamp to look at and to use, it's like a piece of the future. Even the price, if you think about what a good table lamp can cost, is quite reasonable for the remarkable quality and function. And at maximum brightness, it uses 10 watts. It's wonderful.

I will likely return this lamp. Yes, it has a nice look about it. But it is way too cheaply made and lightweight to be even remotely close to it's price. I paid $71 for it, and it feels like something that should cost $17.

On the bright side, it does give decent light and looks cool. But trust me, once you feel it in your hands you will be wondering why it cost so much. The "lamp shade" literally just sits on top of the bottom chrome unit. A slight draft can easily push it off. And get this ... it doesn't even have a button on the lamp to turn it on/off. The "on" button is on the power cord itself. So, when it is dark you need to blindly run your hands down the power cord to locate the "on" button, ARGH!!!

I would be OK with the shortcomings if the lamp cost $30 or less, but not for $71. This is a joke. It will be going back to Amazon shortly.

I needed a light on a counter in my stainless steel kitchen. It isn't in the "work" are, so it doesn't need a lot of light, just a bit to brighten up that side of the kitchen. This fit the bill perfectly. Its clean design goes well in my kitchen and, with the proper bulb, provides just the right amount of background light for the area without being intrusive. I didn't like the curly 60-watt bulb that comes with the lamp. I'll use it somewhere else.

Before I bought this, I purchased a Belkin Conserve Socket F7C009q Energy-Saving Outlet. The first Belkin I received was defective, it wouldn't shut off at the end of the time interval. The replacement worked fine.

The SimpleTouch I also bougth from Amazon worked fine from the start.

As an energy saver, both devices have promise. The SimpleTouch has a parasitic drain of it's own, I measured it consuming 1.1W in standby mode while plugged in. But you can turn the socket back off with a second press of the button. The Belkin does not consume any measurable power, however your device stays running until the time is up because there is not "OFF" feature on the Belkin. So I can't say one is better than the other, however I can say in theory the Belkin is better for energy savings on a low parasitic drain device (5W)

As safety devices, I cannot recommend the Belkin because my first one failed to turn off even though the LED status appeared normal. Keep in mind that adding a socket controller inserts another source of failure. Nothing works better than unplugging the device, but we are human and may forget, so that's where these devices help. For best safety, unplug the timer, not the device.

Functionally, the Belkin seems to offer more flexibity because it has three time settings. However, I have found that pressing the button does not reset the counter to zero. The only way to reset the timer is to unplug it, plug it back in, then restart the process. The only way to turn it off manually is unplug it. This is the worst thing about the Belkin. The SimpleTouch offers only one time setting, but it's perfect for situations where you only want an hour (for me, my morning countertop radio) and may want to turn it off earlier than the end of the timer cycle.

In order to avoid covering the second outlet, you must install the Belkin in the top receptacle, and for the SimpleTouch it must be installed in the bottom outlet. The SimpleTouch does a better job at staying out of the profile of the adjacent socket. However, when you plug in the device you must support the back of the SimpleTouch to counter the plugging force which is inconvenient becuase it requires two hands. The SimpleTouch has a rotating outlet, the Belkin is fixed; so the SimpleTouch might work better if you have a horizontal wall socket and a vertical adapter brick application.

The status LED is dim green on the Belkin, and bright red on the SimpleTouch. I prefer the SimpleTouch because the light from the Belkin can't be seen during the day. Some might not like the bright LED on the SimpleTouch at night.

The Belkin is a little nicer device to look at. The "hourglass" label around the SimpleTouch with a hole punched through it for the LED has a lower quality appearance.

Both devices disengage without coming back on when the power goes out or the unit is unplugged. Both are UL rated.

===Bottom Line===

The SimpleTouch is a better unit if you want the convenience of being able to turn the device off instead of unplugging it and you can live with one time setting. The plug configuration is better, but requires two hands while plugging.

Unfortunately, the SimpleTouch consumes a constant 1.1W of power when plugged in, and feels a little warm. What good is an energy saving device that wastes energy itself? Only on devices that are more wasteful.

My experience so far is that the SimpleTouch is more reliable as a safety shut-off device, my first Belkin downright failed to turn off on my twice, so I returned it for a replacement.

You may want to compare other features in the product description like warranty, etc. I was not trying to compare everything, just what's important to me in the way I use the products.

This is perfect for us! My daughter likes to fall asleep with the light on and with our creaky floors, I would sometimes wake her when I went back in her room to turn the light off. This solves my problems! I have the light plugged into it and turned on. When I want the light on, I push the button on the timer. It counts down 60 minutes and shuts itself off. It's perfect. Also, I have it plugged into the lower outlet, so the upper one is accessible if I need to plug in a humidifier or something else.

I had to cut the felt from the bottom so that I could tighten the nut on the lamp in order to keep it from spinning when it shouldn't. I purchased two of these lamps directly from American Science and Surplus several years ago, and they are both still working. I was surprised by the quality for such an inexpensive lamp.

The lamp housing and base are fairly lightweight plastic. The base is in two pieces held together by two small screws. There is a battery door in the center of the bottom of the base that allows access to install 3 AAA size batteries.

The lamp head is sealed and permanently attached to the gooseneck. There are 14 LEDs giving off a reasonable amount of bluish-white light. They are not extremely bright, but they give enough light to read comfortably in the dark with this as the only light source.

There is a black plastic push-to-make, push-to-break (sorry for the jargon push it once to turn it on, again to turn it off) switch on the base near where the gooseneck attaches. They both still work and show no signs of being ready to fail.

The gooseneck itself is so high quality for this price that it is almost shocking. It allows a tremendous amount of movement of the lamp head and seems like it will last a long time.

The only drawback to these lamps is that they weigh so little. I have made plans to open the base, glue in weights and glue some non-skid rubber feet on them to make them a bit more stable. I have also considered getting more, adding a DC electric feed and modifying the base to make them console lights for a video studio.

These are great little lights. I have used them during power blackouts and on walks at night. They fit nicely in a variety of pockets and the head can be positioned to keep your hands free. One could also use them for any number of costume/device designs.

I have yet to use up a single set of batteries, although I don't use them terribly often. One could use lithium AAAs to get a very long shelf life and extra burn time.

American Science is a great company to do business with and they mail simple newsprint catalogs with some very funny catalog copy (one of their trademarks). I heartily recommend them and these lamps.

Inexpensive and effective. The base is a little light, so depending on the position of the light, it may tip over. I opened up the base and put some weights (steel washers, and that made it more stable. For the price, even with having to weight the base, this little light is great. It puts a semi-focused beam of light on my work area. I use it late at night when I'm working on my computer to light the keyboard.

Vendor is good, shipping time was reasonable, but there was NO communication past the order confirmation as to shipping date or expected arrival. But considering the price and the desk lamp arrived in a reasonable time, and the light was as described, the buying experience was OK.

While I did like this little bright lamp as long as it worked, unfortunately it is designed to fail. After about 2 months of nearly daily use some LEDs wouldn't light, later others started to flicker, and later with many LEDs off the remaining would shine very bright. I've opened it up and it seems the 14 LEDs are all connected in parallel, and this bunch is then connected to the battery through a single 1 Ohm current limiting resistor. Ask anyone with any knowledge of electronics to hear that this is definitely not the way to hook up a bunch of LEDs!

I guess if you don't use it much it might have its place, but it has a high chance of breaking after about 200 hours of on-time.

Best GE 13W (60W Equivalent) Energy SmartTM Light Bulbs Deals

At a little over 10 bucks for 8 of these, you can't go wrong.

These are just your basic CFLs, at the 2700 kelvin temperature range. That means they're about the same shade as your basic ordinary 60W incandescent bulb. A pale yellow white, not pure white (5100 Kelvin), or daylight (around 6300 Kelvin).

Pure white or daylight CFLS cost more because the phosphors in them are more expensive, but they do have the advantage of being more natural light, rather than imitating the poor quality light of an ordinary light bulb.

So if you're thinking of upgrading to CFLs these bulbs are a great deal to start from. But do take advantage of the technology & get a higher quality light at a higher color temperature for some of your areas, & enjoy better quality light, rather than just using CFLs that imitate the poor quality light of old fashioned light bulbs.

Winter depression can be triggered by lack of natural light because of less hours of daylight, & more cloudy, overcast days in winters. In northern climates when it's cold, people stay inside more, use heavy insulating window curtains, further reducing their exposure to natural light. 5100K-6700k CFLs help with winter depression by exposing you to more natural light. Colors look more rich & vivid. Things look more cheery. It's even easier to read under natural light.

I find I can read just as easy under a 4-watt 5100k CFL than a 13 watt 2700k CFL.

The backlight in your LCD display that you're probably reading this from is probably a 5100k-6700K bulb.

Look at the white areas on the screen & then look at your lighting in the room. Doesn't that ordinary light bulb or 2700K CFL look a lot more yellow by comparison?

Things to look on the package:

1. Kelvin temperature (K): The only accurate measurement for the kind of light or "color" of light you'll get. 2700K is pretty close to the "warm" incandescent we are all used to, 4100/4200K is known as "Cool White" (you might look "ghostly under that) and 5,000+ is the daylight/sunlight. If the lamps do not have the K designation, do not buy them they are the cheaper variety since establishing the K temp. costs more.

2. Lamp Life (Hrs): The life of a light bulb is the MEAN life, that is at the stated hours HALF of them will be dead and HALF of them will still be working. Life can be affected by many factors, one being how many times a day you turn them on and how long they stay on. As a rule, the more on/off's, the less they last.

3. Initial lumens: If it is not listed try another brand. For the typical 60W equivalent it ranges between 700 and 900 lumens. Try for 800+ In general the highest the K temp. (see #1 above) the higher the lumens.

4. Make sure you read what they say about DIMMERS, as well as photocells, timers, etc. Avoid costly surprises.

5. Make sure they are rated for outdoor use if that's where you want to install them. The environment's temperature has a lot to do with the CFL performance.

I bought two 8-packs at my shopping club a couple of years ago. I needed them to replace 8 incandescent bulbs in the basement where, with the exception of the area where my home office is located, I didn't need very bright lights. The second carton was bought for 'spares' and because they were on sale at the time I made the purchase. Two years later, the spares carton has 3 bulbs left, indicating that 5 out of 8 have burned out. This tells me that the 5-years/8000 hours life expectancy claim is wildly optimistic, to use a mild term.

My personal experience with these bulbs is as follows:

the light they produce yellow, not very bright is more or less on par with what you get of a 60W incandescent, maybe a little less than a traditional 60W.

they do save energy for as long as they last given their short lifespan in my basement, not sure if they pay for themselves

quality seems to be an issue 5 out of 8 burned out before 2 years all 8 subjected to about the same conditions (they all go on/off at the same time

the claim of 8000 hours or 5 years life expectancy is clearly way off-base perhaps GE should make their test data available

the Amazon price at the time I am writing this review is competitive with what I saw at my shopping club.

This may come close to comparing apples to oranges but I must say that I am very happy with the Feit Electric ESL40TN/D 42-Watt Compact Fluorescent High-Wattage Bulb, Daylight of which I am using 2 in the same basement, in my 'office' area and I bought 2 more a few months ago for the study. I paid a premium for them and I've only used them for a little less than one year at the time I write this (Feb. 2010) so the fact that none has burned out yet is not 'proof' but... time with tell.

I hesitate between 2 and 3 stars 2 Amazon stars means 'I don't like it' vs. 3 stars meaning 'it's okay'. My generous nature wins this time and it's 3 stars but GE needs to seriously look into the 'quality' thing or these CFL may discourage some people from adopting replacing their incandescent bulbs with the more efficient fluorescents.

I have changed to CFLs (GE) in my home. I now write the install date on the bulb because of failure sometimes within three (3) months. The fixtures that fail are random but have used standard bulbs for years. ALSO PLEASE NOTE: The package states the bulbs should be placed base down. What kind of saving do you get if you need to replace the fixture? One positive point is that GE has provided me with discount coupons when I called.

I have switched all of my bulbs to CFLs over the past 5 years. I started noticing that I was changing bulbs more often that I used to with the incandescent type. I then started writing the date on the ballast of the bulb when I changed it. I discovered that it was only the GE brand bulbs that were burning out in less than 6 months. In fact, the last one I changed lasted 20 days (8 of which I was on vacation). It was in a two bulb fixture with a generic bulb that lasted for several years which proves that under the same conditions the GE bulb lasted 3 weeks and the generic lasted several years. On average I get one or two months from the GE CFLs. I have bought generic unlabeled bulbs that have lasted several years. The 5 year warranty requires you to pay more for shipping than it would cost to buy a new one. Talk about a company selling junk with a fake warranty. I will never buy anything made by GE ever since all they make is junk.

This product says 2 speed, it is only one unless I am missing something. It would be a great fan to have on a desk or perhaps just a small fan by you in the living room. It isnt powerful enough to feel from any kind of distance away. I wanted a fan for when i sleep and I thought this little guy might do the trick but its pretty light. I have found use for it at the desk.
