Philips 43-Watt A19 EcoVantage Light Bulb, Natural Light

What most people want in a light bulb is as follows:

-Soft White (which appears somewhere between cream and yellow, like candle light)

-Long Life (subject to opinion and how the bulb is used.. usually over 1000 hours, hopefully over 2000)

-Bright

I had somewhat different requirements

-A more blanced color spectrum which is bluer than "Soft White"

-Over 1000 hours of estimated life

-Between 550 and 700 lumens

-Energy Savings

-Mercury Free

This met my needs almost perfectly.

Pros for this bulb were:

-No chance for a mercury spill in my own, UNLIKE Compact Fluorescent at the time of this review

-1250 hours of life means I won't be changing these every month, but will need a spare on hand for changes once in a while. This is on par with most incandescent bulbs.

-a more balanced bluer light than the yellow of "Soft White" or the red tint of GE Reveal daylight bulbs. GE has tried to create daylight bulbs and in my opinion they fail by using a purplish tint which succeeds in making things look more "daylight" but fails in adding a red/magenta hue. If you compare any Philips Daylight type bulbs with the blue tint to the GE Reveal bulbs with their purple/magenta/violet type of tint, you'll see the difference. On the other hand, if you are only after color of light, Sylvania has MUCH cheaper much more readily available bulbs called "Sylvania Daylight" available in local supermarkets, but none with energy savings.

-Cheaper to run per lumen of light than typical spectrum adjustment coated light bulbs. Bulbs that claim to produce whiter/daylight colored light are usually tinted with a transparent baby blue or light violet paint, to filter the yellows of a standard A19 "Soft White" bulb. The light being filtered to tint the bulb becomes heat, which makes the bulb less efficient at producing like, hotter, and therefore dimmer. For those of us who have some reason to want whiter light but do not want the mercury issues of current CFL bulbs, this added heat became a necessary problem. There is an alternative to CFL which is around halfway between the energy use per lumen of standard incandescent and CFL bulbs, which is the halogen enclosed tungsten incandescent bulb. I'm not going to explain why that is the case in this review, but check it out on wikipedia under Halogen Light Bulb or something similar. Anyway, the Philips term "EcoVantage" emplies ecologically sound, and claims to throw off a similar number of lumens as a comparable 60 watt bulb. Watts mean nothing as far as brightness is concerned, so I did a comparison, and these bulbs are appreciably brighter than other non-halogen "daylight" tinted bulbs. Note how I'm not comparing them to bulbs without a color tinting, because the tint implies inherent inefficiency to an extent. Another thing worth noting is that Philips never claims that these are halogen based bulbs, but it's fairly easy to see by looking at the casing around the filament, inside the bulb. I can't claim to know what gas is in that casing, but I think it's a safe bet that since they make energy efficient halogen bulbs, and "daylight bulbs" that their "energy efficient daylight" type of bulb would just be combining of the previous two. This is the only Halogen and "Daylight" tinted bulb I have found on the market, anywhere. That's why I bought it with all other pros and cons aside.

-Mercury Free; this is extremely important to me. If you look into the reasoning behind why the EPA is allowing the sale of Compact Fluorescent light bulbs, their explanation is that a single broken CFL can be cleaned up properly at home, adding less estimated mercury than should raise the risk of mercury health risks significantly enough to warrant public protection from the product in question. Now ... imagine dropping a box of a few CFLs off a shelf, or perhaps your kid breaks one to see what will happen, when he's at that curious stage, and the spill isn't cleaned up as per EPA recommendations, because he's a kid and doesn't want to get caught, so he does his best to pick up the broken glass, and the mercury remains. How about if the kid broke the box, dumped the broken contents out while trying to pick the box up, and did a poor cleanup of an entire box. Maybe that causes no harm, but I'm happier knowing such a senarion could not have been caused by kid number one, later to effect kid number 2 who the wife is pregnant with. And I can still be about 50% as green as the CFL would make me by using Halogen.

Cons for this bulb were:

-Gets hotter than a standard A19 bulb of any type (unless you could when several of our CFLs began arching over the course of their short lives, and smoldered in the socket, filling out house with the wondrous smell of molten flame retardant plastic. All "daylight" tinted incandescent bulbs are hotter and so I recommend screwing them into porcelain socks if available (half my sockets just happen to be the white porcelain kind) and if they have to be in plastic encased sockets, don't use them in an enclosed recessed fashion. Or just switch to the nice cool CFL or LED technologies, if you don't mind Mercury or the price and availability of LED.

-Is dimmer than "Soft White" incandescent halogen bulbs, due to having a light filter coating. This is not a problem for people used to non-halogen bulbs because the halogen adds brightness, offsetting the dimming effect of the filter coating.

-HORRIBLE quality control. I bought four of these bulbs and two of those four were defective. I don't mean the filament of half were broken from shipping. The filament happened to look intact, but the bulbs failed to light for some other reason, and almost got stuck in the socket. Some of the working ones almost got stuck, while some of them went in smooth and easy. I bought four others that were of a higher wattage, and all worked, but had their own manufacturing defects. If you consider all eight Philips EcoVantage Daylight bulbs I bought, about two of them had less blue spectrum filter coating (I could see the difference with my eyes with them unlit) around three of them were harder to get in and out of sockets because of what I think was too much solder stuck to the side of the male socket on the bulb, and two of them failed to light completely and showed signs of some scorching on the area that had solder abnormalities on the hard to install bulbs. What this says to me is that these bulbs are manufactured to a two sigma standard as far as quality control is concerned. That means every three bulbs, one will fail to work. If you want to look at quality control problems that don't result in failure, it's more like a 1 sigma manufacturing process. Amazon will accept defective bulbs mailed back to them, but I'm still trying to mail mine back, so I guess I'll cross my fingers.

Summary: This is the only Halogen Incandescent Daylight tinted light bulb I could find, and it worked really well, except for the 33% defective thing (or 50% defective if you only cound the 43W ones. Amazon offset the cost of the defects by allowed return of defective merchandise, but that doesn't pay for the customers wasted time. Still, I believe these bulbs are worth the wasted time to mail a few defective ones back. They don't seem to get all that much hotter to me, and that heat is beneficial in the winter, so I will switch out to Soft White in the summer. They help a lot with the dismalness of a cold northern winter, they are amazing to read under, and are very bright compared to other "daylight" tinted incandescent bulbs. I have never run into a whiter incandescent other than Philips non-halogen "Daylight" bulbs. It's just a shame these aren't available in the local stores or through another vendor so the price might come down a little. The current price per bulb three to six times the price of supermarket sold incandescent soft white by Sylvania, and double the price of incandescent Sylvania Daylight bulbs.

Since I'm so happy with the 66% of my order that worked, I'm giving it four stars.

These bulbs work great. They're just as bright as regular 60W bulbs but use 17 watts less per bulb that savings adds up when using multiple bulbs at once. The light quality is very nice too. It says on the package that they're suitable for use in open fixtures. I'm not sure if they can be used in totally enclosed fixtures it should specify that. Otherwise they're good quality bulbs that save energy, last longer, and are affordable.

I've bought it too times. For both times, one of the bulb was already not working on delivery. I would say the product quality control is poor, not all the bulbs are working off the line.

The working bulb from last time only lasted for 4 months and died.

The color is warm yellow, which is pleasant. Perfect for a table lamp.

Although I like the bulb color, I wouldn't suggest purchasing this bulb based on my experience.

Thanks!

Honest reviews on Philips 43-Watt A19 EcoVantage Light Bulb, Natural Light

I needed a dimmable full-spectrum bulb, one with better energy efficiency than a normal incandescent. Sadly, after only three months, three of the four I bought have burned out. Ironically, the only one I regularly dim is the last one working. I have generally had good luck with Philips products, so this may just be a bad batch, but I'll save my pennies for their LED bulbs from now on.

I purchased two twin packs of 100 watt bulbs, one Natural one Soft White. Not a single bulb worked.

Thinking it had to be something in the light I tried them in multiple fixtures. In every case a standard incandescent would operate perfectly while the EcoVantage would not.

Finally after I fiddled around for a while I got one of the bulbs to operate if I screwed it in just a bit, but no more. I suspected a cold soldier joint and that the bulb was working only when the blob of soldier was lined up with the copper tab in the socket but a VOM meter indicated the connection between the base and soldier looked good.

Then I bent the tabs in the socket out a bit figuring maybe the bulb was undersized. Didn't fix it.

I'm pretty sure the problem is a bad connection somewhere, probably in the base, but I can't be sure. But 4 dead out of 4 from two different batches makes me suspect a design problem rather than manufacturing problem.

Regardless of the cause its clear they aren't checking the bulbs or they aren't doing it properly. Whatever it is this is multibillion dollar company and they should know better.

This lamp socket is exactly what I was looking for. Great low price, good description, and arrived 5 days earlier than expected. I used it in a custom lamp I built for my mother-in-law. Works perfectly, brand new.

Switch positions are as follows:

1. All Off

2. Secondary Circuit Only

3. Primary Socket Only

4. Both On

I needed one of these Leviton 2-circuit lamp holders for a vintage lamp I was restoring. These used to be pretty common at one time, so I was a little surprised at how hard it was to find them, as none of my regular electrical suppliers or local hardware stores had them available.

I was glad to find them here on Amazon and made sure to buy extra to have on hand for the next time.

I bought 2 and they're definitely nice looking, but I noticed the "bronze" color (which looks black in the picture, but is actually a very dark brown with a "distressed" ring of dull gold around the edge) has scratched off in a couple places. Fortunately they were places that no one would notice, but it may be something to consider. The shades are greatthick and wavy with nice coloring. Overall, I'm happy.

Glass is irregular, looks classy and gives off lovely glow. The metal holder is trashy, but could be fixed with a bronze spray paint. Only 3 feet of cord is included. This is not enough for the average buyer, but could be fixed by a local electrician.

We purchased 3 of these lights to hang over our kitchen bar.

They are well made and attractive.

The size of the frosted glass is perfect.

Not too big or too small.

The frosted glass is a nice, stylish, neutral color.

My bedroom is very glam. Upholstered headboard, mirrored night stands, etc. I was ready to make a purchase of much more substantial lamps. Most of my previous ones came from IKEA. They looked pretty good but were super wobbly and cheap. I was looking at much more pricey lamps, crystal bases and the like. These are perfect. The shades are shiny but when the light is on they are not. They look fabulous. They were packed to perfection. I was hesitant to wait a few weeks to receive them, but it only took 3 weeks. Well worth the wait. WELL worth the price.

I was looking for the movie "Room 237" when I came across this. I saw this and knew that it would be perfect for the home theater room. As far as the lamp itself goes, it's a lamp. It has legs and a switch. The switch turns a bulb on and off. It works as intended. It's the shade that counts; the shade that's cool. I see that ball rolling up on the shade and my hair stands on end..."Dad, what's in Room 237?"

Now I need one for "Star Trek!"

A couple weeks back a brand new Jo-Ann Fanrics had a sale on all their OttLites, so my wife and I picked up two of these, one white for home and one black for my office at work. Within a week of having it at work I received multiple compliments on it.

Aesthetically speaking, this line of OttLites is very sharp. When you are not using it, you can stand it up straight with the actual lamp portion bent to be adjacent to its neck, giving it an appearance like a cool-looking tall speaker. The picture doesn't show this, but you can see the two hinges at the bottom and top of the neck. Not only does this look nice, but it gives it a minimalist attribute in that it's easy to put up and won't take up much room at all. Functionally speaking, it's not quite as convenient as the standard OttLite task lamp per say, however it works well and looks great.

In terms of the lighting, OttLites are known for their daylight lamps that you can work under their light for hours without straining your eyes. All this holds up here.

I will say just be careful you don't drop this. It doesn't feel flimsy, cheap or, hollow, but with it's materials I'm just not sure if it'd be able to really survive a decent drop.

The only real drawback here is its glossiness. While that adds to its looks, when glossiness is on black it shows smudges and fingerprints super easily.

Other than that this is a great, new design from OttLite. It works wonderfully and can sometimes turn some heads.

This lamp is not worth $40+, but it is worth $10-20. I bought it at OfficeDepot for $19.99 and it wasn't on sale. The quality of the entire lamp is questionable with the overly-high gloss on blatantly cheap plastic and the flimsy joints that hold the lamp crooked. This lamp, like most OttLite lamps, is basically a proprietary bulb with extremely cheap hosing built around it.

If you want a good idea of how any lamp holds-up over time, go to your local office supply retailer and look at the lamps they have on display. Those lamps take abuse for months on end by all sorts of people. This lamp was on display. It looked very beat up and was barely holding up the arm, but the light was exceptionally nice at 5500k (full spectrum), which is why I bought it.

Pros:

It works!

The light has great color and balanced coverage for the size

Cons:

Cheap plastic

Weak joints

Crooked holding positions

Limited movement

Other thoughts:

The holding positions and the shade do not limit the light enough to where the lamp can be placed in a location without the bulb being visible from an opposing direction. This is annoying because the bulb is bright and a bit blinding, so if the lamp is set on a desk with seats on both sides, one side will see the lamp's bright bulb.

Best Deals for OttLite SlimLine Task Lamp - Black, SlimLine Task Lamp

I've had this lamp for almost 2 years and love it. I use it mainly by my computer in the evenings and it gives me plenty of light with no eye strain.

The arm and shade can be adjusted however you want them. One reviewer commented that the joints did not hold up the arm well. That is because that reviewer bought a display model from the store and the store didn't know to tighten the joints. If you do that, you won't have any problems.

I highly recommend any OttLite. They are worth the money to have great lighting for your desk, crafting, etc.

Not quite sure what it's made of, feels plasticky. The lamp gets its "stained glass" effect from some brownish staining, which is only on one "leaf," so pretty poorly executed. Packing was ok but did not prevent one of the back panels from splitting. Light bulb a struggle to insert properly. It also comes covered in oil. The instructions say that this is the case, to "protect" the leading, but really, I think one extra manufacturing step would be to buff the lamp properly, rather than the buyer finding herself coated in grease. It serves its purpose as a night light and is reasonably attractive, but I wouldn't buy it again overpriced.

LiteFuze Mosaic Glass Rechargeable Solar Lamp Outdoor Garden Light Reviews

LiteFuze Mosaic Glass Rechargeable Solar Lamp Outdoor Garden Light - Color Changing
Customer Ratings: 4.5 stars
Buy Now
After weeks shopping for solar LED lights for our patio garden, lights which were designed to hang and focus their light downward, I came across the LiteFuze in green. Sadly, the reviews only go back as far as March 2011, so I took a chance and ordered 3 of them. Wouldn't you know, when I opened the package, 2 of the 3 LED tops were not fastened to the globes, and the 3rd soon let go. It appears they were held together with an adhesive that might be sensitive to Arizona temperatures. If they are going to let go in the summer heat, I prefer they do so before I hang them. I had read a review saying the hanger did not seem to be secure and that the writer used wire to secure it to the globe. I agree that he has the right idea.

Before I wired mine together with stainless steel safety wire, none of them worked, but tapping them caused them to turn on and off erratically. Closer examination revealed that the positive battery contact was, ever so slightly, recessed too deeply in the plastic housing to make a firm connection with the AA cell's terminal. Moving the AA cell ever so gently confirmed this was the weak point. Solution: I placed a small piece of copper foil between the AA cell and the terminal to fill up the space. The down side is that now the AA cell can be bumped out of position, but our lamps will be hanging where they will not be bumped. So now I have 3 LiteFuzes lamps, held solidly together with a strand of safety wire, and a piece of copper foil making for a firm electrical connection.

As for their performance, my wife and I are pleased with the soft green light her plants receive from above, and the pleasant view of the textured glass globes. It is too soon to tell how well and long they will last. I will revisit this review if further comments are warranted. Would I recommend buying them? Well, I am ordering more with fingers crossed. At least I am prepared with more safety wire and copper foil. Too bad that it is that way. They seem to have had more artistic thought put into them than technical engineering and craftsmanship.

UPDATE: SEPTEMBER 19, 2011

After writing this review, we ordered an additional 9 lights. The subsequent orders all arrived in excellent condition with the globes firmly attached to their tops and no electrical problems as happened with the original order of 3. After performing the above safety wire and battery servicing, I can say that we are very satisfied. They come on within a couple minutes of each other at sunset and originally produced sufficient light for 4 hours to make for a pleasant evening's garden view. After 4 hours they began dimming at different rates so I replaced all the AA cells with ones from the Home Depot and, since then, they are fairly uniformly bright until about 6 hours. I have experienced a 25% failure rate when one had to be exchanged after it decided to stay on all day and not recharge, and two others totally quit a few weeks later. So far, exchanges have gone smoothly, but they have a very short exchange period. Keeping our garden lighted might become too expensive.

UPDATE: FEBRUARY 2013

Last summer we experienced some erratic behavior with some of the lights. Replacing AA cells did not solve their recharging problems. SO, all the lights had their rechargeable cells replaced with alkaline AA cells. I know, you are not supposed to do that, but we were desperate for ideas. Wow! All the lights come on at nearly the same time, are bright the whole night long, and go off at sunrise. I was expecting to replace the alkaline cells at least twice a month, but they last 6 months! Go figure? If more problems develop, we will wire them all up to a central battery/charging unit. They are just too pleasing to give up.

We ordered two of these (blue and green) based on the photo in the advertisement and were not disappointed. The light was even better than the pictures. After experimenting with a LOT of different solar garden lights, we have come to know which ones are really worthwhile and a good value for the money vs. the overpriced/cheaply made ones. The item is roughly the size of a small melon, glass and open at the bottom. We have it sitting on a table, but plan to hang it on a decorative hook. The hanger at the top may be its weak spot as it doesn't look as well made as the rest of the item, but should be adequate. As to long term functioning, time will tell, but I expect it to hold up nicely. All in all, highly recommended.

The lamps are working well and are very beautiful. Good product, excellent customer service. Four stars for product, five for service. Any company can make an error, it's how they handle it. Well done. I plan to now order a white one.
