This lamp is very easy to assemble, looks amazing (light or no light), and all of my friends notice and love it!! It's great!! The lamp itself appears very nice, has substantial weight, and has a very nice finish. However, the switch is made out of cheap plastic and is not aligned very well with the metal piece it protrudes from. This makes it VERY difficult to turn off and on and I'm quite confident that in a very short amount of time it will wear out and stop working. In fact, in just a few minutes of me playing around with it, it failed to operate a couple of times. I fear that if I want an operable lamp I will have to buy one of those wireless sockets to plug it into so I can have a wall-mounted switch to turn it off and on (if you have a wall socket with a dedicated switch this would be just as useful.) And although this method will work (despite the extra money spent)it defeats the 3-way switch and bulb design completely.

So I'm happy with the lamp in general, but the switch did not appear to be designed by the same company that made the lamp. Pretty silly if you ask me, especially when you consider that the lamp will be useless if the switch fails!

I purchased this lamp for it's looks and style. Amazon had the "best price"! Easy to unpack and set up, but the over all quality of the lamp's stability is lacking. I will work on it to figure out what adjustments may be necessary. I'm a handy person, so not a problem for me. Overall, it fits the look and style of my contemporary surrounds....only wish, if it had a dimmer switch, allowing "mood" lighting.

The lamp is very nice but smaller than I thought. When you measure 23" it doesn't look big at all compared to my other 23" size lamps. It's just small. The shade is only 9" at it's widest area and 5" at the top. The lamp is just a Chinese lamp that you would maybe buy in a big lots type store. I do like it, but way over priced compared to what you can at say say Hobby Lobby and they have 50% off sales all the time. . I'll have to find a different spot for it as it is to small to put where I purchased it for. As I said, I do like it, It's just small and over priced.

The price paid is probably a bit too much for the quality, and anytime you order items such as these that have to be put together, perfection should not be expected. That being said, a couple of the glass panels had small scratches in the paint design, and a couple of the panels did not line up probably to be held securely in the bottom clips. It does operate as described and the receiver of this item (as a gift) was happy with it... that is all that matters, right?

This lamp is beautiful to the eye, looks awesome with the decor of my bedroom. Since it arrived, it was put together but has not worked. At first the lights just kept going on and off themselves non stop. I literally had to loosen bulbs to make them stop. Then when i tightened them again....NOTHING....doesn't work at all. $40 down the drain. Would cost money to send back. Two items this week I receive from Amazon not able to use...not happy one bit.

A few years ago touch lamps seemed to be in most of the local stores. I had an old bedroom touch lamp that I wanted to replace and could no longer find them in local stores. It's very flimsy, but several I have seen or tried in this price category were also flimsy. I could deal with that except for the fact that the kit includes old-tech T-12 bulbs instead of the newer, brighter T5 bulbs. The lights are not as bright. Also, one of the bulbs flickered and no amount of tinkering would stop it. Then, the bulb went completely dark. A few days later, it came on again. The ends of the bulbs are dark and so you don't get good light for the entire lengths of the bulbs. I would have rated this 4 stars if it included the better T5 bulbs. I don't remember seeing the type of bulb in the description. If it was there, then it's my fault for buying it in the first place!

The first fixture I received was DOA. I switched the bulbs and starters. I even opened it up to make sure all the wires were connected it just would not work. What irritated me was that the instruction sheet reads: "All fixtures are tested prior to shipping." They do not give a phone number or email address to contact if you have any problems. I got an RMA from Amazon and they sent a replacement which is working well. Tip: The carton is sealed with heavy-duty staples. You can easily rip the carton trying to open it. Be careful and remove the staples with pliers, just in case you have to return it.

... but not as good as the one I bought from Park's in 1991 or 1992, which lasted about 20 years. This one is also not as elegant as the old one, nor as stable. The word that came to my mind after I had assembled it was "rickety." I doubt that it will last 20 years but, then, I probably won't either. So, for people like me (no children and no cats or other pets) it serves its purpose. I am using it to display houseplants. It comes with two Sylvania T12 Gro-Lux tubes. It has an on/off switch so that you don't have to unplug it when you want it off. Also, it is silent; I mention this because I have a jump-start lamp (bought three or four years ago) that I use for tomato seedlings, in a spare room, and that one has a constant hum. This one does not.

This is a very understated, classy lamp. Solidly made. The picture is misleading though. I searched on 'drum shades' and from the picture and description, thought this was going to be cylindrical. However, it is not tube-like, i.e. when you look down on the shade from the top, it is oval shaped, not round. This makes the shade look smashed. I'm keeping it though, because it is on a desk in a corner, and I have turned the shade so you can't really see the smashed effect. I guess this kind of thing just happens when you buy online without seeing the actual product in real life:/.

This does not come with a power cord, and runs on 1 D battery, also not included. Not necessarily a problem. It does not come with a light source which is frustrating but I didn't really think that through as a feature before I bought this. We put a headlamp on the table to shine at it but then the mirror reflections only come from one location... so put another headlamp on the other side. Okay, but all reflected dots are white. Colors or changing colors would have been better. Product seems top heavy and makes me nervous that it will tip over, especially with the young kids dancing around. Overall, not the best choice; wish we bought one of the other ones.

I ordered one through a Groupon, from another site but I believe this is the same and I'm getting others. I have salt rock candle holders and lights around my home, but I wanted something for the office too. The lights are beautiful and it still has a natural looking shape. I just hope it lasts for a while. I imagine you can unscrew the bottom and replace the bulb when it burns out, or I may use it over a flameless candle at that point.

I bought three of these pendants to be placed over a vanity in my remodeled bathroom. When I opened the box and took out the light, I wondered whether the glass would be too thick for the light to show through. I was wrong. The light does glow very nicely through the glass, which highlights the beautiful, blue color. I used three pendants over a five foot vanity that has a black/silver granite top and a huge silver framed mirror between the vanity top and the bottom of the pendants. The effect is stunning. At the last minute in the remodeling process, I decided to put these pendants on a dimmer switch. It was a good move. You get an entirely different look when the lights are dimmed.

Alvin CL1755-B Swing-Arm Combination Lamp, Black Review

I love this lamp! It large and has a good reach. I was reluctant to buy it because of the price, but now I'm glad I did. I'm a very particular person. I love products that are functional and work as though an experienced engineer designed them. This lamp is both.

THE FRAME:

It's made of 1/2" x 1/2" square steel tubing. It has (2) four-arm plastic knobs that can be used to adjust the tightness of the articulating joints. They measure 2 inches across and are just the perfect size to grab with your fingers for tightening. One is located at the lamp shroud and the second is located mid-frame. There are (4) extension springs used to hold the lamp up. They are covered with telescopic plastic sleeves so the spring is not exposed. These covers are a very nice detail and give the lamp a clean look and also keep dust and stuff from getting caught in the springs.

THE LAMPS:

The two lamps have separate switches (rocker style) on top of the shroud and can be turned on one at a time, or both at the same time. The 28 watt T-5 round bulb that comes with the lamp gives off a bluish-white "daylight" fluorescent color (>3500K). The second light has a female socket for a standard incandescent lamp, so you can put the color bulb of your choice in. It's a base-up E26 medium lamp socket. I use a Philips Marathon 23watt Mini Twister in mine. This soft white compact fluorescent lamp (CFL) gives me the same soft light as a standard incandescent bulb (2700K). Having both of these lamps on gives me a nice bright soft light that is good for reading. Its not too white, and not too soft. The Philips Marathon can be found at Meijer. And for some reason both Meijer stores close to me stock them in the grocery department away from the rest of the light bulbs.

THE MOUNTING CLAMP:

You will need a 1 3/4" lip sticking out from your desk for the c-clamp style mounting bracket to get a full bite. The clamp will accommodate thicknesses from 0 to 2 1/2". The clamp itself is about 1 1/2" wide. The metal mounting c-clamp has a 17/32 diameter hole in it that accepts the lamp frame. This hole is sleeved with plastic to provide a durable surface that wont wear out and wont squeak when the lamp is moved. Also, the mounting hole is completely covered on the inside of the c-clamp. I have telephone wires looped through mine and I dont have to worry about the wires being cut. There is no way for them to touch the mounting pin from the lamp as it moves.

THE SHROUD:

It's about 10" in diameter at it's biggest point and 7" in length. It has a nice wire handle screwed on the front side that can be used to position the lamp. It stays cool. The size is perfect. It looks nice.

FINAL THOUGHTS:

This heavy duty combination swing arm lamp is built to last a long time. The paint holds up well and doesn't flake off. It is nice and quiet when moved. No loose parts, nor rattles. It is nice as a desk lamp and also a drafting lamp. Its made by Alvin and their black and white part numbers are CL1755-B or CL1755-W.

I first placed an order for this in late August 2011 and received exactly what is on the description page: an Alvin brand Combination Lamp, black in color. It is a fantastic product and I highly recommend it.

The first week of September 2011 I returned to the exact same Amazon web page to order another item. Almost everything on the page remained the same including the product specifications which states Alvin as the manufacturer and CL1755-B as the model number. Two very small but important details were changed in the product details section: the ASIN number and the model number. These new numbers now correspond to another lamp made by APCO. I know this because I have the new version in my hand right now. I will upload a photo of the box of the new lamp.

I am sure this lamp is perfectly fine but it does not match the Alvin lamp exactly and definitely does not match the majority of the product page.

UPDATE: October 2011

After receiving a comment from another purchaser who ordered and received the Alvin-brand light I decided to try again. This time, I did receive the correct Alvin lamp from another vendor (still through Amazon). This now illustrates that since the product page describes one item and specifies part numbers for another you can receive both depending on who you buy it from. Sale Stores, by the way, sells the Alvin unit.

The lamp itself is great: super solid, well made. The problem is that this Chinese-made lamp has a PROPRIETARY CIRCULAR BULB that is a different configuration than any other bulbs available. My lamp arrived with a broken bulb. This proprietary bulb is backordered INDEFINETELY! It is not available on the Internet. It is not available from electrical supply houses in the US. It is backordered from the manufacturer. I'm a smart guy and figured I could find one. No luck! I might consider returning the whole lamp for replacement, but what happens when THAT bulb burns out, assuming it arrives intact.

This was a gift for someone, so I am doubly annoyed.

My new plan: find a comparable lamp that uses standard bulbs.

Reading these reviews I purchased this light from this website and it came shipped new from Quint Graphics. Nice and big, worked fine for 30 mins till I tried turning the fluorescent part off then on. This fluorescent circular light flickered for several minutes but failed to come back on. Tried 10 times and once out of 10 it came back on, otherwise it flickers trying to restart. Reseated the starter but same...didn't work. Letting it sit (cool off) for a few minutes and trying again it still just flickered trying to come back on. Made in Thailand and the electrics looks pretty cheap. Disappointed as I needed this light for my work.

Cheap Gotham Tiffany Style Downbridge Desk Lamp

I ordered this lamp for my home office desk; my home was built in the 1920's and the lamp fits perfectly with the architechtural features and decor of the house. It's doesn't give off as much light as I was expecting, and the directions for putting it together were very sketchy. All of this would have been forgiven, because the lamp is so pretty--but! After I have had it on longer than five minutes, it gives off a God-awful odor of burning plastic and causes a headache. I've had the lamp a week now, and I'm hoping that the scent is coming from some sort of coating that will burn off. I won't leave the lamp on when I leave the room, for fear that something is wrong with the wiring.

I really don't want to return it (both because it's attractive, and because it will be such a hassle to re-pack and ship), so I'm going to wait and give it another week or so of use. I don't think I would buy it again if I could do it all over, though. What a shame.

I contacted Lamps Plus to complain about this product and to make a return, and received a prompt email the following day. Julianna at that company suggested that I wipe the lamp down with windex or a similar cleaner sprayed onto a damp cloth, and that would remove the film of mineral oil that was burning off and creating the odor. I did this, and the odor is 90% gone. I'm sure if I clean it one more time, there won't be any odor at all. At least now I know it's not a safety concern (such as wires burning or something)! It's a beautiful lamp, and I'm glad I can keep it--but there should be something in the instructions that warns you of the possibility that it might smell, and what to do!

I do not recommend this lamp. To begin with, the lamp was shipped with integral parts missing. Horrific "instructions" for assembly. Took a month to finally get some parts, which are the wrong ones. Dealt with both Lamps Plus and Quoizel via email. Just too sick of trying to get the needed parts, so I managed to jury-rig it so that shade kinda stays on. When it started to slip (missing parts) I tried to adjust but the entire lamp, arms and handle were so hot I could have burned myself. Very difficult to get the mid-lamp arm to adjust via the small "stick" meant for the purpose; either too loose or too tight to complete the turn. (Did I mention that the lamp gets so hot you can't touch it?) The shade is smaller than I envisioned; there were no measurements given in description of lamp on Amazon--my problem. On plus side there was no odor, as other reviewer noted. I really resent the fact that I paid almost $200 for this junky item, but can't get up the energy to re-package and send back, and an illness makes it difficult to go out to shop.
