This is a great lamp, and it got instant praise the moment I turned it on. I put 2 energy efficient 15 watt bulbs in it (rated the same brightness as a 60 watt conventional bulb), and it lights up the whole room. It has a floor switch that makes turning it on and off very simple. I'd like it more if it was taller, but the height is accurate from the description.

The lamp looks nice when lit in the darkness and casts a warm glow over a 3 foot radius or so. I used two GE 13 watt CFL soft white bulbs (825 lumens, 60 watt equivalent) for lighting, so more light may be possible with higher-rated bulbs. The light was similar to the color shown in the pictures, not as orange as some other buyers have experienced.

That said, this floor lamp isn't practical for lighting purposes. Even within the light radius, I would have some strain on my eyes while reading, so ceiling lights or a good torchiere are certainly necessary for room lighting. As an ornamental piece, though, it looks fairly nice.

Note on quality of build: only the vertical, twisting frame is metal. The horizontal bars running up and down the sides are cheap wood or imitation wood of some kind, and the spacing isn't entirely consistent between the bars. The bars are also glued on to the paper lining of the lamp, so they can't be adjusted.

Conclusion: as with many ornamental pieces of this type in this price range, it gets the job done, and looks better from several feet away (or across the room) than it does close up. I'm satisfied with it and will keep it, but will have to supplement it with a proper torchiere to get sufficient lighting in my living room, as it effectively casts as much light as a strong nightlight.

I like this lamp but be aware it's going to cause the output from the sides to look very orange. It seems most of the light that's supposed to illuminate the room comes from the top. That doesn't do a lot of good in my application, but in a room with a ceiling it'll help a lot. In terms of light output it's a bit weak where I'm at, but I suspect much of the light is getting soaked up by the open, dark ceiling above. The switch works well, and the cable is a reasonable length.

It is worth noting this lamp takes two light bulbs, and the lower one could be a lot easier to change if they would flip the socket upside down. Approach it from the bottom of the lamp.

The packaging prevented the light from getting damaged, but it's also some of the worst packaging I've ever encountered. It just doesn't seem like there was much of a strategy to it. It's an odd mix of styrofoam, plastic bags, and bubble wrap.

i got 2 of these lights, and they are WAY COOL. they are very lightweight and simple in design. the lining inside is a yellowish color, so when you put the bulbs in, it colors it to a beautiful warm off-white. it also casts a very interesting shadow on the wall from the diamond shaped top. VERY cool light, extremely happy i got it. totally worth the money. very unique and functional.

This lampshade is nice, just the right size not too big, and looks reasonably well made. Packaging was not quite as robust as could be however.

The light depends on the output of the bulbs feel free to mix up different outputs so long as they are less than the overall load bearing ability of the cord and fixtures etc.

Gives a nice ambient glow, just right overall very happy with it.

Would prefer if it was manufactured in the USA its not a complex item like electronics..

Lava Lite 5225 16.3-Inch Silver Base Lava Lamp, Yellow/Purple Reviews

Introduction: This company claims to make the "original" lava lamps because they invented the "Lava" name, but they licensed the actual product from the British company Crestworth, which started the production of this kind of lamps in the early 1960s and changed its name to Mathmos in the 1990s. A friend of mine has a truly "original" Mathmos lamp from the 1990s, which has pretty uniformly-colored water and wax from the bottom to the top when it is on. I have never seen a lamp of this quality from Lava Lite, but the Lava Lites are also much cheaper than corresponding products from Mathmos (which are not officially sold in the U.S.).

I got my first Lava Lite 16.3" lamp about 1 1/2 years ago. When it was on, the water and the wax showed the color of the (white) light bulb at the bottom and became more colorful towards the top, but the water was clear and wax bubbles were going up and down as they should. I liked it. Unfortunately this lamp was destroyed by a cleaning lady a few weeks ago.

My new lamp from Amazon is exactly the same model, but when it arrived two weeks ago, the water was very cloudy, and this has not changed so far. When the lamp is on and I look at it from a close distance, I can see the wax bubbles, but while the water is more cloudy than in the old lamp, the wax seems to be more transparent the desired effect of colorful wax bubbles moving in clear purple-colored water does not occur at all; from a distance it looks like an illuminated bottle of thin pomegranate juice. I am too lazy to send this $20 item back to Amazon, and some people say the cloudiness may disappear in a few weeks, thus I will keep this lamp and see what happens, but I am disappointed. And I don't understand why this new lamp is so much worse than the first one is it from a different factory? Was it shaken too much during shipping? Is it a "refurbished" lamp that was not treated right by its previous owner? Many other customers seem to have very similar problems with Lava Lite lamps. On the basis of these experiences I cannot recommend this product. Try to get the British one if you can.

Alot of folks have had bad luck with their LL's, so here are your LL basics:

1 If you receive a lamp with the liquid so cloudy that you cant see the lava, send it back for replacement.

these require special handling in shipment and must not be shaken or rattled. It should be shipped in an upright

possition.

2 After removing your LL from its box, you will see a round coil, possibly imbedded in some solid lava.

Try to get that coil down to the bottom near the bulb. If the coil will not lay on the bottom because of the wax,

just place the lamp in the base and turn the lamp on. It may take several hours for the wax to

melt enough to free the coil so it can rest on the bottom but do not leave the lamp on for more than 6 hours even

if the coil is not yet on the bottom.

Wait until the lamp is room temp and try again, NEVER leave the lamp on more than 6 hours.

3 Eventually, the wax will melt and the coil will settle on the bottom.

4 Never shake or even move the lamp while it's hot and the lava is flowing.

5 Check the bulb placement. The light bulb MUST be exactly dead center. If not, you can move it while it is cool.

6 Do not place your LL in a cold room (50 or less) because the wax will solidify too fast and eventually, it will

break-up into tiny globs.

7 One more time, most important (I dont care what someone else said), DO NOT leave your LL on for more then 6 HOURS.

If you do, the lava will break up into tiny beads and will never form a solid mass again. It will look like a mess

and it wont even move.

8 Buy your LL from someone you can trust and has a good return policy (like Amazon) because alot of LLs are received

damaged in shipping. Rough handling will cause the "cloudy" look where the wax has been mixed with the liquid.

9 If you want to see the lava at it's best, avoid the ones with dark colored liquid and light color lava because it

will be difficult to see the lava through the liquid. Clear liquid, or light blue or green works best for lava visibility :)

I have owned dozens of LLs in my life. Got my first one back in the 60's, and they made them much better back then.

Have fun with your LL and remember the 60's when life was less stressfull :)

Reading the reviews here, I was really wary of buying this item at all... It seems that the lamps with the "clear" fluid have issues with being very cloudy. So perhaps steer clear of those. I went with the version that has yellow lava and purple fluid. At first I thought that this combination of colors was going to look kind of tacky and not as classic as the red lava/clear fluid versions. I went for it anyway. I love the colors. The lava at the bottom looks like molten gold and as it rises, it looks reddish at the top. It pretty much looks like the cartoon image they show on the product page. The fluid is a pale purple and very clear. When it arrived, there were little flakes of "lava" (the wax) all throughout the fluid and I was a little worried about whether the flakes would disappear with use or if they would always "dirty" the fluid. Well, after running the lamp for about 4 hours, all the flakes of wax melted into the main blobs and the fluid is totally clear. It looks great and I'm really happy I got this larger size. So nice and way more affordable than the tiny ones I saw locally for twice the price.

I haven't had a lava lamp since I was little and I forgot how fun and hypnotic they are to watch! Recommended!

I have to say that Amazon shipped the lava lamp package in a box with no packing material thank goodness it didn't break. Not impressed with that part, but of course that's no reflection on the product. I haven't had it long enough to comment on the longevity of the lava lamp but it's off to a great start.

After reading these reviews, I decided to roll the dice and see if I could get a good lamp. I got a murky disgusting looking swamp bottle. I saw someone posted that the company has discovered a flaw in their manufacturing process, but I have no idea if that's true. Even if it is, who knows what that means or when/if we will be able to reliably get a good product from the end retailers. Steer far clear of this product. I posted some pictures here so you can see what you're probably going to get.

Lava Lites were first popular when I was a teenager. I was glad to see they were making a comeback and have been for several years. I bought two at the same time; this one and a glitter Lite. The glitter works fine but this one doesn't. I followed all instructions and the light worked but once. Each time I turned it on the Lava sits on the bottom and doesn't move.

I contacted Lava lite who told me to return it to Amazon. Amazon is just terriffic about returns. In two days I got a shipping label and the defective lite was on it's way. 1 star for Lava Lite but 5 for Amazon!

I work in the live events industry, and so spend a lot of time in a dark backstage area. I need small lights that travel well and aren't too bulky so that I can see my scripts and what not. This light is super tiny when rolled up, but extends enough to focus it well where you need it. It gives off a soft white light that's pleasing to the eye and isn't too dim or too bright, and best of all the head isn't too heavy so it doesn't need a huge amount of support to keep the goose neck upright. It's weird that whoever's selling it is just reselling IKEA stuff, but I love it cause I don't have Amazon on Prime with IKEA, but I do here!

I used to have the red version of this lamp on my desk at work. I won't get into the details of how I managed to get a $500 desk lamp at my low-wage job, but let's just say that there was a short period of time when pretentiousness ruled the day. Now, about the lamp...it works well, it's really unique in that it has settings for different tones of light, and, let's face it, the lamp just looks cool. That said, one of the lamps we ordered didn't work and had to be returned, and the lamp that replaced it didn't work and also had to be returned. Third time was the charm, and finally we had a lamp that was functional. Then, ironically, it sat on my desk for over a year, and I think I turned it on three times. I might as well have kept the broken one, for all the good it did me. It just didn't provide enough light to be useful even at the highest settings. Still, if you're looking for a showstopper in your office, this is it, hands down. I wish I had money to blow so I could buy a new one for my current home office, even though I never used the thing. Really, it's that unique and gorgeous. It's just so unnecessary...

This Tiffany-like lamp gets only four stars because at no place in the descripton did it say that the shade was not really glass--it LOOKS like glass. The size is good, it has two sockets that will take fluorescent bulbs, and the light is pretty through the shade. However, keep in mind that the shade is resin and plastic, not metal and glass like implied by the term Tiffany-style. Since I bought it through Amazon Warehouse, it was a terrific value.

This lamp arrived well packed. However, the lamp appeared to have been in the packing under conditions for so long that the foam and plastic had firmly adhered to the side of the lamp base. It was impossible to remove without also removing the finish. In my case I removed the loose finish completely and repainted the lamp. It is a beautiful stately lamp, but unfortunately required repair before it could be used.

I have owned at least 20 reading lamps in the past 10-15 years from very expensive to very cheap. This is the best ever!! It is so bright that I often turn it to the lower setting, I never have to fiddle with it once I have attached it to the book I am reading and in fact the design allows me to rest the light on my chest if I am reading lying down. I adore it and plan to buy several more as stocking stuffers for all the readers in my family.

I've been looking for a portable reading light to use with my Sony Reader PRS-500. Finding the LightWedge here on Amazon, I thought I'd given it a try even though it makes no claims that it would be suitable for anything beyond a REAL paper book. But with the relatively low price it seemed a reasonable gamble and besides, given the reviews it's clear that it would work with regular, tried-and-true paper books and magazines, which in actual use I found it does indeed do very well.

Even as a reading light for Sony's electronic reader it works quite well, but how WELL it works does depend upon the angle that I need hold the Reader relatively to my eyes. Any angle that's not close to perfectly perpendicular to my face, and there's a "glaring" problem (sorry...bad pun I know). The lack of a backlight on Sony's electronic ink device means any user must operate it just like regular printed reading material, so to read in low or no ambient light an external light source is mandatory. The LED, as great as they are shining on a printed page, given the wrong viewing angle are too intense even for the matte-finished LCD screen of the Sony Reader, even when set on the lowest of the two lighting settings.

While the bright, blue-white given off by the LEDs is relatively easy on my eyes on printed paper, there's often a brutally intense, three-spotted focused reflective glare bouncing off from the face of the LCD of the Reader. This makes reading the immediate surrounding text difficult if not impossible to read when the Sony is held at an angle to my face, and requires constant fiddling with the angle of the LED light housing or adjusting the hold on the Reader to make it perpendicular to my eyes' line-of-sight. Moreover, the non-'inked' portion of the Sony's LCD (the background to the text) is rather dark compared to the usual printed page, and makes the overall lighting effect of the LCD seem rather cold and sterile relative to its look on the printed page. That said, it does light the screen pretty well, but at the cost of having to read with a specific viewing posture--something that for me can be hard to do when attempting to read in bed or lying around on the couch.

The unit's batteries are another bone for me to pick on. Rated at 30 hours of use per fresh set of batteries, the LightWedge relies on two relatively large, button-type CR-2450 3V lithium watch cells for juice. Not exactly cheap and not necessarily the most common size around, the batteries are a literal drain on the wallet. In a watch you could easily get a year's worth of use out of one of them. But if you read in bed an hour a night, you're replacing TWO of these roughly every month. Assuming the cost of a pair of these cells at $3 a set (that's what a lone seller here on Amazon charges at the time of this review), that's $36 a year in batteries just for a little night reading. I'd go through nearly a couple of sets of batteries before I even use up a single charge on the rechargeable Li-ion cell built into the Sony Reader. Frankly, I think it might be advantageous for the makers of LightWedge or any other LED light maker to devise a slimline rechargeable solution instead, even if it costs more up front. Certainly within a couple of years it will have paid for itself, seems more congruent with the long-lived nature of LEDs, and we wouldn't have all these spent lithium watch batteries to dispose of.

In general, the LightWedge offers a decent non-AC solution for low-light reading, particular with printed page media. Less obstrusive that most table lamps and certainly portable, the LightWedge is easily adjustable for tackling almost any sort of book or magazine, as long as you don't have any problems with the cost of operating the unit and have a well-stocked source for all of those batteries you will end up needing at some point.

I ditched my previous reading light, which used an incandescent bulb, in favor of this reading lamp, which uses three LED bulbs. The difference is dramatic. Not only does this tiny thing put out a wide yet discrete, bright beam of light, I can tell it will last much longer in terms of battery life. My last reading light would last about 4 hours on two "AA" batteries. This lamp uses those quarter-sized lithium batteries, which again provides ample light. Even the lever arm is easy to use and convenient to position over my book. Highly recommended.

Received lamp. No problem with ordering and it arrived on time. Very difficult getting lamp out of the shipping box. I had to destroy the box and material surrounding the lamp. A real mess. However, my problem is with the lamp shade. The material has a 'run' on it, not unlike a 'run' in a lady's hose. Amazon unable to simply replace the shade without returning the entire product. I don't understand why a replacement shade can not be provided without repacking with new box and support material and returning the lamp and shade. The lamp is fine, really nice, but spoiled in appearance by the less than perfect shade. So, purchasers be advised that an 'expensive' lamp comes with problems. Amazon after a few attempts to resolve was as helpful as possible. They sent a new lamp where all I had to do was easily remove the replacement shade without tearing up the contents. But again, the replacement had the same problem. I am not confusing the seam in the shade with this 'run' in the fabric. I would advise that overall this is a very nice base to a lamp, however, the product must be review as a whole. I can only surmise that the MFG accepts poor quality control as its standard or just doesn't care. I do, so take heed.
