This is at least the eighth or ninth of this type of lamp I've bought over the last fifteen years, so I have some insight into the things. I love `em, but they are hardly perfect.

The really good news, and the reason to buy them in the first place: I use two on my desk in my home office and get wonderful, bright, even coverage of my entire workspace, without shadows, and having one widely shaded lamp on each side of my computer monitor means that I can mostly (not completely) avoid the glare that would be a problem with a side or centrally placed single lamp. They clamp on the edge of the desk, and therefore don't take up valuable real estate, and are easily adjustable to put light wherever you want it. I wouldn't use any other type of desk lamp; I'm thoroughly spoiled. My girlfriend thinks they're ugly; I say form must follow function, and they work GREAT.

The principle problem is that they burn out the central electrode for the incandescent bulb under regular use (I keep mine on probably twelve hours a day M-F). Frequently scraping the carbon off it helps (caution: risk of shock and death, unplug the darn thing first!), but when it goes, it's gone, and none of my attempts with a soldering iron have been of avail (everything gets very brittle and fragile). They tend to last a couple years or so at my desk. This latest unit seems to have mostly the same electrode construction as those previous; we'll see. I will say that the metal shade is larger (see below) and the lamp seems to run cooler than the older ones, so this may decrease the problem. They have also substituted an extruded metal bump for a lump of cheap solder as the actual point of electrode contact, and that may also help. The same small and shallow grommet holds the electrode in place, though.

These run between $50 and $200 at discounted prices. The cheap ones are garbage; they function poorly, especially the clamps used to set position, and break easily. I haven't tried the most expensive one (Luxo), and I probably should, but all my purchases have been in the $120 range when adjusted for inflation. This lamp is noticeably more robust in general construction than those I've bought in the past, though I've never had a cantilever arm fail or break. The springs are covered rather than bare; though one would have been hard put to pinch oneself in the others, they do look a bit neater.

I must respectfully disagree that the bulb shipped with the lamp is a "daylight" bulb; the one I received, at least, is an even-bluer-than-usual fluorescent, so much so that I used an ordinary soft white incandescent bulb to try to even out the light color instead of the "Reveal" bulb I would normally have used. The combo works well, and this combination is the reason these lamps were designed in the first place, I believe; the redder light from the incandescent and the bluer fluorescent light combine to give you a good 200+ watts or so worth of fairly balanced light on your workspace. The new fluorescent bulb is larger (28W rather than 22W) and I definitely recommend you buy this version. Part of the reason is the larger shade to accommodate the greater diameter bulb; as mentioned above, it may help the lamp run cooler, and there is noticeably more light (though it's bluer).

You can only buy these in white and black at present; previously, they were available in cream, which looks a good deal better in most traditional offices (hint to the manufacturer).

Not your normal drafting lamp: a high quality, professional drafting lamp for artists or architects.

It uses two bulbs: an ordinary incandescent (up to 100W), and a circular flourescent bulb. When they are both on together, the light is supposed to mimic perfectly the color quality of natural daylight.

I'm so happy with this light. Would you believe I have 5 of them scattered throughout my house?

They used to make a black one, but apparently not anymore.

I like this type of lamp. Being able to swing a lamp over the work to get the best light and see what the work looks like under both florescent and incandescent light are qualities I value.

Unlike the lamp this one replaced this one is very well built and I expect I will be using it for several years rather than the several months of the last lamp of this type I purchased.

I am an avid cross stitcher and have been aided by a magnifying light for the last 20 years. I am on at least my third, since I wear them out with constant repositioning. This is definitely the lightest weight and easiest to manipulate. This is also the first I have had with a toggle on/off switch rather than a push button. The push button has always been the first element to die on each of the lamps. The price was good and I hope this one lasts a long time.

Customer review from the Amazon Vine Program I was excited to get this light. I work a lot at the table, especially when my garage gets too hot. I've had other swing arm lamps before, both at work and home. This is a pretty good quality lamp that moves freely, has good optics, and illuminates well, except for one thing. The underside of the clamp, which grabs the top of the the desk/table surface, is made of hard plastic ridges. Most clamps for various products I've seen have rubber or foam or something to prevent damage to your furniture.

I thought I was safe by folding a piece of paper up several times and placing it in between the clamp and the table surface. I still ended up with damage to my table (see my photo under this product). I would highly suggest buying some type of rubber mat material to cut and put in between the table or desk surface and the clamp. If you ended up with damage to your furniture like I did, here is a helpful fix.

To fix dents from this clamp, take a very damp paper towel and fold it up a couple of times. Place it over the dents and then take a hot iron and 'iron' over the paper towel. The iron heats the water in the paper towel up and steams the wood fibers, causing them to swell. This brings out light dents and greatly reduces the visibility of deeper ones. It may take a couple of times to get the full benefit. I've had great success with this trick, but use at your own risk.

Other than that, I was happy with the functionality of this light. I don't know why the manufacturer did not put a softer material on the clamping surface.

Customer review from the Amazon Vine Program The cardboard box this lamp came in was flimsy and strangely-shaped, making it prone to getting beaten up in transit, even inside a bigger (standard shape) box. Made in China and the subtle Engrish on the box shows it. The warranty information is printed on one of the box flaps rather than the paper instructions insert, making it harder to hang on to. Printing on the packaging reminds you to take all the foam out from between the bulb and housing (3 pieces), but I think the instruction would be easy for the average person to miss.

The lamp is not UL listed, but it does say on the box that it's ETL listed (another standard testing agency that's still making a name for itself). The bulb is a standard T9 circular fluorescent tube, 22W, with daylight spectrum, and it looks like replacements can be had here on Amazon for a reasonable price. I flipped back and forth between this and a 50W halogen (nonmagnifying) task light a few times, and while the color rendering was different, neither was clearly better or worse. This probably had less glare, though, and runs cooler. The cord is pretty short, I think a little under 5 feet, so you'll need an extension cord unless your mounting point is next to a wall with an outlet very nearby. The lamp's on/off switch is on the top of the head, and is a very big and user friendly rocker.

The table clamp has a nicely textured grippy material on the top surface, but the bottom/screw end of the clamp is a metal cup that will be prone to slippage and/or damaging the bottom of your table, so adding a piece of flat padding material between the table and the cup would be a good idea. I used some of the cardboard that was wrapped around part of the armature for initial shipping. There's a horizontal screw on the clamp that can fasten into a slot in the base peg of the armature, but the slot is only on one side of the peg, so the armature has to be facing the open side of the clamp. This limited me because I wanted to mount it on the near side of a table to the right of my crafting chair, but it was spinning everywhere, so I had to put it on the far side of the table and lose a couple feet of reach in spanning across the table.

I realized on trying to use this with my stitching that I'll need to be sitting at a low table or working with something fully down in my lap to realistically use the magnifying glass function and still have room to move my hands under it. The magnifying glass seems to work fine, though. Generally the lamp stayed where I put it, though it sometimes took a little encouragement, and the triangular hand screws at the armature joints seem to work OK. A feature I really liked is a nice metal handle on the front top edge of the light so it's easy to reposition the light/magnifier without touching the very warm bulb/head.

I got this for free from Amazon Vine in exchange for writing an honest review, but if I were looking to buy this I'm not sure I'd pay what they're asking for it. I'd probably feel better about 2/3 to 3/4 of the current asking price.

>The light has a circular T9 fluorescent bulb that's energy saving (22W), provides a bright, white light that's closer to daylight (°K color temperature) compared to incandescent lights that are yellowish.

>Very easy on the eyes with minimal glare.

>Much easier to use with the smooth pivoting/positionable arms than wearing magnifying loupes or using a handheld magnifier.

Slight dislikes:

This magnifying lamp helps me enjoy my hobbies much more and is also useful for reading small print on product boxes, legal documents, and warranties. The lamp is functioning well after five weeks but long term durability is unknown.

Customer review from the Amazon Vine Program This is a great desk lamp for working on small objects. The light is bright and very white, so you can clearly see whatever is you're working on. In my case, that's painting miniature figurines, and so a white light is important for seeing the colors accurately.

The magnifying lens is also nice. It's large and not too high of a magnification. I can see my minis very clearly.

I do have a few complaints, though. The construction quality does not really justify it's $60+ price. The clamp, in particular, seems weak and unstable. I have it secured to my desk, but I know if I pull on the lamp, I can easily rip it out and damage my desk and the clamp.

The other problem is the packaging. This was shipped in a 2' x 4' box, which is easily five times larger (by volume) than that lamp itself. In addition, the warehouse put the lamp in the corner of the box and just covered it with packing paper, which means that it was only protected on two sides. Don't be surprised if the lamp box arrives damaged. The lamp itself should be fine, but I would not be surprised if the bulb is damaged.

Great little light. Use it in the bedroom as a dim light when getting up at night or as a light to read before going to sleep. I want to get a few more for other parts of the house where lamps just are too big. I also love that it is a touch light.

The lamp arrived late, but it only missed the due date by a couple of days. No problem there. The lamp itself is actually a much darker color than appears in the picture. The color is more jade and celadon. I had to shift a few things around but made the color work in my living room. The style of the lamp is lovely. Again it appears much lighter in scale than it does in the picture. Because of that it fit my space much better. The detail on the shade balances the simplicity of the lamp base. When shipped the lamp shade was packed separately so be aware the shipment comes in 2 boxes.

KNG Lionel Train Lamp Review

Despite the fact that this lamp looks solid and classic (looks like a real wooden base in the photo with a glass shade), it is actually 100% plastic. We have had it for 7 months and I would not buy it again, nor would I recommend it to anyone with children. The lamp makes a low crackling sound for several minutes after we shut it off, like it settling down after getting too hot (though the bulb we use is the wattage specified by the manufacturer). I never feel very safe when this thing is on, and certainly won't ever leave it unattended or on for too long. Cheap plastic construction.

Several years ago, my wife bought me two different Lionel train lamps at a local Lowes store (way cheaper than what is listed here). After a short while (less than a year), nothing worked on either lamp ~ neither the light nor the operating train. Made of pure, cheap plastic with parts that probably burn through (I purposely used low wattage lights to make sure the lamps didn't overheat but they still burned out WAY TOO SOON). BUYER BEWARE unless you have the tools and know-how to carefully break open plastic components & rewire/replace with lamp parts that will actually last. This is not a knock against these Amazon sellers; the product itself looks sharp but is poorly contructed due to cheap, electrical parts.

After my cats broke my last set of bedroom lamps (made out of glass) I was looking for a nice looking, sturdy, inexpensive set of lamps (no sense in spending a lot of money on something they might break). I've been very happy with this lamp. It is short (a bit shorter than I expected) and very sturdy. I got the burgundy color because my bedroom set is cherry and it fits right in with my decorating scheme. I got two lamps one for each end of my bureau and together they make a nice soft light (each takes a 60 watt bulb) that is perfect for both reading and watching television. And the lamps are indeed very sturdy they've already survived being knocked over several times by the cats!

I've been searching for a sewing light that's bright, adjustable, won't obstruct my view, doesn't take up a lot of room or get super hot. I've tried many different lights, nothing really comes close to this one. Pros: 1) Flexible you can adjust the arm so it can "bend" over and go up and down, 2) No Obstructions does not obstruct my view, I can see the needle and stitch plate clearly without obstruction or shadows, 3) Takes up very little room you just clamp the lamp to the right of your sewing table, hardly takes up any room, 4) Stays cool not hot to the touch. I really like the Slimine Table Light it is just what I needed for sewing. I have bought many other lights, but this one is the best. I put it to the right of my machine, and it never gets in mt way. I love the way you can push it up and out of the way when you put a new spool on, or rewind a bobbin. The clamp seems very secure. Happy after 2 years I found the one that works for me. Bye Bye old lights.

I was looking for lamps that weren't too expensive and took a bright bulb. These fit the bill. They are well made. The slate is a thick slab of natural slate. The wood is painted. As far as style goes, that is a matter of personal preference. I find them attractive. My husband is on the fence, but appreciates the light they cast. The picture is quite accurate.

I love this lamp it adds texture to my room and the colors that come out in the slate go so well I wanted the blue/green in my taupe room. I like the shape too the lamp is between two seating spots and it does not protrude into the line of vision.

It is not as bright as I may have liked but that may be the 3-way floriscent bulb that i put in it.

Overall, I absolutely love it!!!

I first bought the table lamp version of this to replace a lamp that broke. This gives a softer light and still stands nicely as a gleaming steel lamp. My living room is not wildly modern but it has steel appointments -drapery rods, fireplace screen and now two very nice lamps that cast more than sufficient light. It compliments the brick on my fireplace and the large (3 ft by 4 ft) steel sculpture hanging above the mantle.

It comes in four sections ready to screw together and already wired up (HOORAY). The trick is to screw it together from the bottom up and tug the electric cords out through the base. Not hard at all but cumbersome. It's a nice, tall lamp. The base is a good weight and the lamp will not rock or tip easily.

This lamp was exactly what I was looking for to complement my contemporary living room furniture which consists of glass and chrome accents.

The lamp was easy enough to assemble following the enclosed directions. However I was very disappointed in the craftmanship. The top section of each lite where the glass shade meets the chrome base is crooked and the manufacturing defect gives the whole lamp a lopsided look. There are also chrome screws provided that attach the glass shade to the lamp. The holes on the lamp base and the holes on the shade do not allign. It would be such a nice lamp (if it were straight). Obviously this manufacturer doesn't believe in quality control. I would return this product but don't want to deal with trying to get it back in the styrofoam packaging. In my opinion this lamp is definately not worth the price.
