I bought this product specifically because it was originally described as being/having "mood-brightening Natural Spectrum light." I thought it would help on the gloomy Pacific Northwest winter days. I got it on a Friday sale price, so it seemed like a good value for the product description given here.

The lamp just arrived (a few days ago when I originally submitted this review), and the product's FAQ sheet states this product is "designed only to provide excellent quality light for daily tasks and hobbies. This lamp does *not* offer the correct level of light intensity specified by the National Institute of Mental Health for the treatment of Seasonal Affective Disorder (S.A.D.).

The product literature packed with the lamp has no mention at all that this product offers "mood-brightening" light. Because of this glaring misrepresentation, I am currently debating whether to the return the lamp.

I agree with the other reviewer that the adhesive labels (there are two) are VERY sticky and difficult to remove completely. I used a combination of methods to remove the adhesive residue.

And I agree with the comments about the company name being printed on the front of the lamp. When I saw it in the picture, I thought it had to be some kind of company watermark or logo for the stock photo ONLY, so I was shocked to see "Verilux" actually printed/embossed into the lamp housing, in a very prominent location on the front of the lamp. Very cheesy, for a lamp of this price point and quality.

If you're looking for a "clean" bright light, in a stylish, portable lamp, this is not a bad choice. But if you're looking for a full-spectrum light that does offer some light "therapy," this is probably the wrong choice. The company does have other, "therapeutic" lighting options, but at a higher price point.

Nov 1, 2006 UPDATE I was concerned enough about the original, misleading product description that I submitted my concerns to Amazon. I now see that the description had been revised since submitting those concerns. I want to thank Amazon for their very prompt response in correcting the product description, which should help other buyers make a more-informed decision.

Solid construction. An elegant design which would be a lot better if the name "Verilux" were not on the front. The type doesn't scream out at you but still, I don't pay this much money to look at ads.

Bought two lamps. One on each side of the easel makes my mistakes pop out from across the room. The lamps arrrived a few hours ago and I could see the second I turned them on I will save a lot of time and frustration while painting (note: brought two only because of a sale. One would be adequate)

For reading, I'm not so sure about the lamp. For traveling--definately. Far better light than the class of motels I stay in afford. And it is portable as it says. Very slick how it folds up. At home, I'm accustomed to a bright but soft yellow light. The Verilux light is probably better on the eyes. A matter of taste I suppose. Don't think it would take long to become accustomed to the Verilux for reading. Probably be harder to go from it to an incandescent.

For the price, Verilux should use better "removable" adhesive on the labels on the front and top. Or not put labels on at all. Took some effort to remove the gunk. Best way is to take the label and dab it back repeatedly on the gooey areas. Don't bother with soap and water. Doesn't work (as I knew it wouldn't when I tried but that was all I had).

I've been using this as a reading lamp in both my home and work offices for about the past six months, and generally have been happy with it. The other posters certainly are right about the sticky residue, although the company name doesn't bother me, I guess, as I'm withing viewing range of my Samsung monitor, Jamo speakers, Logitech keyboard, Brother printer, etc., etc.)

I haven't thought about this lamp as being portable, given that it weighs over 3 pounds, but if you read a lot it might be worth taking along. It certainly is bright, but not overly so. I find the natural spectrum light makes the material easier to read and causes less eyestrain than regular incandescent or fluorescent light. The bulb does put out some heat, so be careful.

There's one annoying quirk. In my office, the lamp is near my Tivoli table radio. When the lamp is on, it causes an electronic buzzing on the FM band. There may be some filtering I can do to solve this problem, but I haven't found it yet.

I love this lamp for crafting (making greeting cards) and reading. In fact, I pack it and take it with me to bridge tournaments because hotel room lamps are not exactly reader-friendly. Since it casts a relatively focused beam of light, I don't keep my bridge partner awake as I read into the wee hours of the morning.

Good features:

--The light is excellent, but not so intense as to cause eyestrain. You can see true colors using it (important for artists and crafters).

--The 27 Watt 4 Pin Full Spectrum CFL Replacement Bulb Verilux CFML27VLX lasts practically forever, and is the same bulb used in the verilux floor lamp that I own.

--It doesn't take up too much room on my work table or bed-stand.

--It folds up when not in use, and this feature also makes it easily transportable.

One not-so-good feature:

--Sometimes the large, inset screw that allows the lamp to fold loosens up, and you have to retighten it with a quarter. I just keep a quarter taped to the outside of the lamp. Believe me, a fingernail does not work in this situation.

NOTE: the non-pink lamps are a bit cheaper.

At first I loved this light. It is nice and bright, and my office has no window so it brightened my room. However, after a few days, the top part would not stay up anymore. It slams shut unless it is completely vertical, which does not place the light where I need it most, and which bothers my colleagues. I also assume, based on the last week, that it will soon no longer stay up at all. I close the light every night and place it into a drawer, as my workplace is not the most secure. I wonder if this is why my light does not stay up anymore? For $90 I expect way better than that.

I am extremely disappointed by this, as it stopped functioning correctly by the second week of use, and I don't know if I can replace the item at this point, so $90 for nothing!

I rated this lamp a 4 for it has some rough area's on the stained glass lamp shade. Great color and there was some pink which is great. The colors in person are so much better and deeper, even looks pretty with out the light turned on. I purchased this lamp for a gift and glad that I did. Maybe I'll get one for myself in the future.

I ordered two of these lamps for a room that hasn't had real light in years. They really were much brighter than I thought they would be, but that's a very good thing in my case. The lamps were easy to put together and only took a few minutes to set up. Definitely worth the price.

I bought a paper vase lamp before to brighten up my desk but it wasn't bright enough and stable. I bought this as a substitute which performs really well.

Pros:

Adequate Size. It is not too big or not too small. Just adequate size to fit on the side of your desk, table or whatever.

Nice design. Although the sewing and finish is not high quality, it still looks good for the price.

Stability. Due to its simple design and appropriate weight, it is pretty stable to be set in any place.

Brightness. I DISAGREE WITH OTHER REVIEWS. This lamp is not too bright. It is just bright enough for bedtime reading, but not enough to brighten up your whole room. Just keep in mind.

Cons:

Brightness. I read the reviews and thought this would be really bright. This one is not enough to brighten up your room instead of other floor lamps.

Lumination. The white fabric shade is not truly white. Due to its thickness and deep beige color, the light on the side does not really come through much while the upper and lower part of the lamp, which is not covered by the shade, is pretty bright. I think they should have used a thinner or whiter fabric for the shade.

The lamp is very well made, strong and sturdy. The dimmer switch is what sold me on the lamp and is awesome! I thought I was buying an adjustable lamp...it is not. I think it dangerous because it has the tendency to "fall on its face" placing the hot bulb in contact with desk surface....maybe paper. So I've had to screw it tight & remember never to leave it on unattended.

It's a great lamp and the dimmer switch is fantastic. It's easy to maneuver in the directions it's designed to, but you can't rotate the stem on the base which would be very helpful. Other than this minor difficulty the lamp is great.

This is a pretty lamp with an attractive Craftsman design and I get compliments on them; I have two. The lit base with dragonfly relief is unique. I wish the base was glass but it's good quality plastic. To install the bulb in the base, the lamp has to be disassembled. When reassembling it's difficult to set the lightpost straight up because the molding around the top of the base is uneven and makes it hard to set the post plumb and thus the shade has an uneven attitude. Since I have two of these it was a bit of work to make them appear uniform when seen together. This dealer's price is roughly 200% more than I paid for mine. I would investigate other lamps of similar design for quality before paying this price. The shade could've been built a little better but is a reasonable replication of the original type. I use mine for accent and am happy with them.

It looks good on my nightstand, but for over $100 for a nightstand lamp, the quality is not high enough. While the lamp is completely sturdy and well constructed, the materials do not seem top quality and are just... a bit off. For example, the shade just does not look like the elegant color in the picture but looks a bit cheap. Another complaint is the top piece (black upside down u) that gives the lamp its great look prevents bigger light bulbs from being installed. I tried to install a GE 150-Watt equivalent halogen light, but the top cannot screw on when a bulb that big is installed. This is frustrating because I really wanted more light but would have to sacrifice the look of the lamp.

All in all, not a bad product but I'm sure you could do better for the money.

This is a very unique, very stylish ceiling light. The major downfall is the amount (or lack of) light that this puts out. Basically it makes a good nightlight that will cast a soft mood light across a big room. You cannot use this light as primary lighting, not nearly enough output for that. I ordered two lamps, one football and one baseball, for our boy's room.

They came partially unassembled but packaged well. The assembly was easy but the upright post did not line up perfectly when screwed in. Not a big deal and no one will notice except the person that puts it together.

It is rated for 60watt max bulb. The bulb sits on top of the shade bracket. (some lamps have the shade on top of the bulb. This might prevent you from using a larger CFL bulb which would probably stick out from the top of the shade.

Both shades had brown trim so they look nice together. They are maybe a little taller than a cereal box but not by much.

Price seems about right for the quality.

This lamp is nice but not as nice as it looked in the pictures. It does appear to be good quality. Lamp arrived very quickly but arrived in questionable shape. Luckily the lamp was bubble wrapped and it did not break but the shade was marked and damaged. The post office had put a note on the package saying that it "arrived damaged" and I hesitated opening it, however it was halfway open anyway (yes, I could see my order half way hanging out of the box). As far as the item goes, it is just ok. I don't think it was my best purchase.

My eleven year old granddaughter LOVED the lamp! It is a great size and I really liked the finish used on the ball, shoes and whistle...I was expecting to see a perfect white and black ball, but all items looked like they had been "used: ... which is what they really should look like. One of the shoes had come loose so i glued it back on which is why i gave it 4 stars.

The lamp shade is nice and is exactly what I am looking for. That said, I ordered two shades and one arrived destroyed which I found pretty annoying but things happen. I put in for a replacement and mailed back the destroyed shade. Today I received the replacement shade and surprise! it is destroyed and unusable too. I am now onto ordering my third shade (second replacement) and this has been a huge hassle and run around to get packages back to Amazon. If the third shade comes destroyed I will be returning both the replacement and partner shade from my original order for a full refund. Amazon seems to be great at everything but there needs to be some sort of help in the shade shipping department :)

I saw the reviews about damage in shipping, but thought I would take my chances because it is hard to find this item. It came damaged and it isn't worth the hassle of returning it for the amount of money involved. My advice to prospective buyers is to find a Wal-Mart or Marshalls that carries lamp shades. I should not have ordered a lamp shade online.

It's a simple, plain, white lamp shade. Attaches at the top with a hole in middle. The only thing I don't like is that it came kinda scrunched. There were sections all around the top of the shade that bend in and I had to press them out. Even doing that though, it left creases. I'm not horribly picky so it doesn't bother me enough to return it... just something to be caution of.

I looked over some of the reviews saying that this lamp sags or that it broke after a while, and while those claims may be valid, I don't think they give the lamp enough credit. If you find a position that you like and leave it there, it is awesome.

I bought this lamp over a year ago, and it has worked great.

you can prop it up one of 2 ways, either insert it into a clamp that clamps on to the edge of your table, or place it in a base (as shown in the picture).

When it was inserted into the clamp, I did note that it sagged a little bit, but it still worked fine. I now have it resting in the base, and the lamp is standing on its own a little less than 2 feet above the surface of my desk. It brilliantly illuminated my entire desk (about 4' wide by 2.5' deep)

I reaaaally like the tone of this light. It doesn't feel like a fluorescent light, or a halogen light, but it's definitely as bright as one. Honestly, the only drawback is that sometimes i'll turn it on during the late afternoon when it's a bit darker to get some extra light, and i'll leave it on accidentally because i think the light in the room is sunlight.

I first want to say something about the reviews mentioning it not staying in place. I see this kind of review on almost every single product out there, someone gets a defective unit, so instead of replacing it and giving it a chance, they are all crap because of a lemon off the manufacturing line. Well guess what? It happens, manufacturing is not a perfect process gauranteed to produce a perfect product 100% of the time. And so what if the QA guys missed your one lamp, they probably have to check several thousand a day, and hey, we are all only human right?

On to the lamp. It has been the most useful addition to my workspace since I got a third monitor for my computer. The arms give it a great reach, and with the pivots you can place the lamp in just about any position, and unless you have a huge desk this should be more than enough to reach all corners of your workspace. It comes with a very bright light out of the box, I've been using it two months and no sign of dimming so far.

The main thing that I have against the lamp is the support at the base. It is just a plastic nub on the lamb base that fits in either the desk clamp or the desk base. A little better engineering would turn this into some kind of a locking mechanism, as it would be more sturdy. I can see why they chose to do it this way, it is extremely simple and cheap to produce. What this means is it turned out to be fairly loose in either base. The lamp moves around a bit more than you want when adjusting the light, it also leans to the side a bit when you have it extended. This makes it harder, but not much, to position the lamp in exactly the position you want. Personally I just made a shim out of a piece of paper, seemed to do the trick at first but it has become a little loose from use. This makes me worry as it means the plastic is flexing and that could cause the desk clamp to break at some point. Fortunately they are nice enough to provide you with a second base should this happen, it is much more robust and not likely to break in any way. The desk base is fairly large, about 4"x6"x1" and weighs a couple pounds, so you need some space for that if you don't like the clamp that you can attach to the sides of your desk. The clamp has about 1.5" of clearance, and I may have gotten a bad bolt with mine, but it is slightly curved. It took me several tries to clamp it to my desk because the bolt would keep sliding out of the plastic block. This was probably not helped by the fact that my desk was putting the clamp right on the edge of it's clearance, my other desk clamped to very easily (~.5" thick top). Once I got it secured it was fine however. I haven't even needed to tighten it in two months

Highly recommended lamp, caveats aside, mostly for the amount of freedom the lamp has to move. The reach of this lamp eliminated the need for several other smaller desk lamps, clearing up precious desk space.

The lamp failed after 7 days of use. The transformer in the base of the stem apparently caught fire and melted the plastic. This is the 2nd one of these lamps I have had that failed (the first broke at the neck holding the lamp). Pure junk, don't buy it.

Stylish little thing but bright as day light. It fits perfectly on messy tables and doesn't take space at all if u clamp it. It hangs over my computer and can be moved freely. I like the black color, it fits great with my interior.

I purchased these lamps to coordinate with my living room decor. At 31 inches high they look better(to me)in the living room setting versus the bedroom. The lamp shades I received differ slightly from those pictured. The knob that attaches the shade to the lamp is different too(mine were gold and oblong). The brown portion of the lamp body is not as "shiny" as pictured. The lamps are constructed of a durable polymer(plastic)so the worry of dropping and breaking them is eliminated. All in all I like these lamps very much and more importantly so does my wife !!

I received these lamps broken and very poorly packaged for travel. The lamps have a dule finish and I was very disappointed. I was told to return them at my expense after disagreeing with that, I was told to return COD (which it still cost me). I have done this and it has been at least 2 weeks, I have yet to receive a credit on my account, including the COD charge amount I had to pay to ship it back. I am very angry and will NEVER use this company again.

The lamp came quickly and was just like picture. My problem is that it is a bit tall with a small base. I have to be careful they are not tipped. They are on my nightstands and my child is young and playful and has knocked it over. I also think the shades got little creases near the bottom rim. Other than that, they are lovely.

We discussed what size would be needed. This is great for normal piano music, i.e. portfolio size books. Couldn't be happier with this. We bought black so it wouldn't call attention to itself. The price is high, but then there's not a mass market for these to offset costs and create competition. Very happy with this purchase.
