The box it ships in is okay, and they use a lot of packaging. I'm sure some people will receive broken lamps, but I can't imagine it'd happen often; there's almost too much styrofoam. The build quality is pretty good; the lamp feels solid. It doesn't seem like it would take much to tip it over; the cat hasn't knocked it over yet, but I wouldn't trust a five-year-old around it. Cord's a little shorter than I'd like, but it's servicable. Looks like about five feet. The switch is a basic rocker switch, located on the cord about three inches away from the base of the lamp. Trust the colors you see in the pictures; my "brass" lamp is essentially brushed steel.
Max wattage is 60W, made in China.
I really like the design of this lamp, but unfortunately the glass light shade doesn't dim or diffuse the light very much at all. Even a 40W bulb (or equivalent CFL) is too bright to look at. It's basically a bare bulb.
I'm sure this light will be great in the right situation, but I can't think of a single place where I could use it after seeing how ridiculously bright it is. It's not a good bedroom light because it's too bright for the people who are trying to sleep. It's not a good living room light because for the light to be useful, it's got to be placed high enough for everyone to get half-blinded by it.
Alternately, if you have easy access to standard-socket bulbs that give off less than 40W of incandescent-equivalent light, this would probably be great.
Worth it if you plan ahead--but it doesn't do well as an upgrade over a more conventional table lamp.

I purchased this lamp to use as a night table light. The light is a little on the bright side, but it functions fine.
