I use this lamp with a 45w Full Spectrum CFL bulb (larger than the regular bulb that comes with it) and find it is the best reading lamp I have ever had. I only wish that the manufacturer would not use specialized terms when indicating the type of bulb used in the lamp. It uses a bulb with a regular (typical incandescent) base. I had to research to find out that the term used by the manufacturer meant simply that. But that does not detract from the lamp. It has a very heavy base making it a very stable, solid lamp.

The is a very solid unit which gives off a nice glow and the base is very heavy with a wide footprint so it is very stable. I have it on a wood floor but it should be stable on a carpet as well. For the big living room space where it resides. I use a 42 watt (2750 lumen) CFL with 3500K color temperature and it gives off a nice warm glow with good dispersion in all directions. I don't recall what CFL it came with but I think a smaller bulb. If you do go to a larger CFL bulb be sure to check the length so it does not stick up above the top of the glass cone. My only negative on my unit is that the little on-off, turn knob that presses onto a grooved post (typical of those you see on stove knobs and car radio knobs) was a bit too loose a fit so could get yanked off too easily (and potentially gobbled up by a vacuum cleaner). A dab of super glue on the post before pressing it on solved that.
