These lamps were almost perfect. They were packaged very very well. The only thing I didn't like was the fact that the shades didn't sit evenly. One was tilted, and the other one wasn't beveled enough to sit all the down this caused one shade to be higher than the other. I had to purchase some fine-grain sand paper, and with 20 minutes worth of sanding, I was able to correct the problem. It was a very cheap problem to fix ($2 for the sand paper), but it was still a hassle.

As for the aesthetics of both lamps, they are gorgeous. They look just like the photo. The construction is pretty durable, while the framing of the shades, like almost all lamps out there, are on the flimsy side. This can't be helped. It seems all lamps are made like this to reduce topside weight to keep the lamp from easily toppling over. Just to let you know, the shades are a long oval shape. They not circular.

As for lighting, both of them can easily brighten a room with the right bulbs. Since the lamp shades are thick, very little light will actually radiate horizontally. This allows a person to appreciate the lamps directly with their eyes without being blinded. Most of the light will be radiating towards the ceiling and down below. I used trial and error to find the correct intensity, and will pass my findings on to save you some time:

I used two CFLs emitting 1200 lumens (brightness) each, at 2700k (color).

This will provide a warm yellow light that will be soothing and ambient, yet bright enough to read and do homework perfect for the bedroom. If these lamps are being used in a living room or bigger space, I suggest going up to 1600 lumens instead.

I totally fell in love with them when I first saw them and even more when I received them ... they look great on my night stands ... perfect size ... I loved their shape which is elongated oval instead of round so they take much less space ... the shade are made of polyester while the black designs are velvety ... the make is slightly on the flimsy side but they are totally fine if you don't move them every now and then ... the color of the shades is definitely not white ... it's ivory more like the color of butter, actually a shade darker ... so don't go for them if you are specifically looking for black and white ... if you are fine with ivory, they are a very good value for money ...
