Our tornado lava lamp did not work either when plugged in. My son noticed a spring was attached to the magnet where the motor is. He removed the spring and placed it below the motor in a slot where there are other springs. The motor then was able to run. The spinner disk inside the lamp was then able to rotate and create the tornado effect. The tornado is smaller than expected though. Doesn't look like the picture at all.

As a child I was fascinated by all forms of vortexes so this lava light brings out my childhood fascination! Very fun to watch and impresses all of the friends!

It's lit by LEDs and has a tiny motor which spins a magnetic bit inside the lamp which once it hits high speeds causes a vortex inside the glass. If you think back to Charybdis in "The Odyssey" you'll get the idea of what is going on here.

Since it is LED lit it has a very low power consumption (roughly 6W) so it's barely more costly than a night light to run.

Unlike a traditional lava lamp which can take upwards of 15-30 minutes to get going, this lamp only takes seconds.

"Santa" got this for my son (7 years old) for Christmas this year and he LOVED it! He's totally into tornadoes, and this light was a great and unique gift that he wasn't expecting. GREAT color when it is turned on. There are also glittery bits inside it as well, so as soon as it starts spinning, it is very shiny and colorful. It's quiet when it is running, and really makes a fun night light too. I liked that it is plug-in instead of battery operated. It was well packed when it shipped. Absolutely no problems. It fit the bill for exactly what I was hoping it would be when we got it.

The piece on the bottom that is used to make tornado came undone even thought it's a magnext and reconnects, it still makes a horrible noise for someone to see too. I bought this for my son and he can't sleep with it making so much noise. I would not recommend this to anyone. Poorly made!!

It's mesmerizing in person and is actually cheaper at a local Spencer's store near me. It changes from blue, red, and then to green. Although in my lamp, the green led is rather weak. You can't expect too much quality control from lamps that cost this cheap.
