The base of these lamps is a cast resin material which apparently breaks pretty easily. The first one I received was broken, and when I sent it back and ordered another, the lamp we got had clearly been broken and glued back together again. It looks like that one broke at the factory because they painted over the glued break. I'm giving it one more shot hoping that the 3rd time is the charm...
Edit: The 3rd one arrived okay.
