I bought a similar lamp for my desk. It has a goose-neck so can be turned to shine on whatever I want. I tried to find another one for a different room but they stopped making them. I found this one with the stem protruding from the bowl. I believe the stem/handle allows you to position the lamp without your fingers getting hot. The bulb is halogen, which is great light but gets hot. The bowl of the the lamp is metal so it also heats up. I guess the stem is an upgrade. The on/off toggle is on the base. I like the lamp but it does get hot.
