but for my need (about 12 1/2 inches) it's just right at the shortest height. Works great for me!

I have had this lamp now for almost a year. While it is a good lamp for on a desk, there are a few problems I've encountered. First, there is a small fuse in the base of the lamp, while a lot of lamps have this, over the 10 months that I've had this lamp, 2 of those fuses have blown, and the only place I could find replacement fuses was at one of the area electic supply places, but had to go to several of them to find one who carried them. Also, on occasion the lamp will not turn on, so I check and it seems that the holder for the fuse has loosened up enough that the contacts have to be squeezed together for a good connection. Secondly, halogen lamps usually don't need to have the bulb replaced very often, I have had to replace the bulb 6 times since I've had it, buying the bulbs in a retail store you're going to pay $4-$6 for one bulb. So I would recommend purching extra bulbs with this lamp if you buy it. As with all halogen lamps this one does get warm when it is on, that's a normal thing so be aware that it does happen. While this lamp does provide adequeate lighting for you desk, I am only giving it 2 stars since it goes through so many bulbs in a short period of time, as well as the fuses and the fuse holder.
