It seems a bit pricey, but it's the only lamp I've found that can really produce the amount of vitamin D a person needs with very reasonable session times. I like the fact that Dr. Holick (who wrote The UV Advantage and is a well-known vitamin D researcher) was involved in the lamp's development and recommends it. It's not fancy, but it works the way it's supposed to. The timer, although mechanical, is pretty accurate. The bulbs don't put out much heat (unlike like a tanning bed), and they're fluorescents, rather than the old style mercury type. The maximum recommended time of exposure is five minutes. For me, that amount of time begins to produce a very faint tingling feeling, so to be on the safe side, I stay below that for each particular exposure area (and always make sure I'm at least 15 inches away from the bulbs, per the instructions). After 6 months, using it several times per week, I have absolutely no tanning, but I do have good vitamin D levels. I usually put the lamp on a table, expose the front and then the back of my upper body, then put it on the floor and expose the fronts and backs of my legs. Be sure to wear the goggles to prevent eye damage!

The new fluorescent model still emits way too much UVA although it emits less UVC than the old mercury lamp model. After getting burnt for the first time with this new lamp after only 5 minutes (whereas the old mercury one never burnt me after even prolonged exposures) I've looked at the fluorescent lamp spectrum, and was shocked to find that most of the emission is in the UVA region, which causes skin cancer and skin aging. UVB will do the same, but if the lamp was truly a good vitamin D lamp with only UVB, unnecessary UV exposure and risk would be minimized and health effects could be maximized. I think it is a little sloppy with all the optics expertise in the world, and the fact that vitamin D deficiency is a major health problem worldwide, that a vitamin D lamps are not available with truly tailored emissions in the vitamin D producing UVB spectrum. I give two stars for the fact that Sperti is the only company I know trying to make product which can produce vitamin D sufficient to correct deficiencies. But, they should publish the full spectrum of their lamps and show that this is a real improvement with less UVA and more UVB and not just a cost-cutting strategy since fluorescent lamps are cheaper.

I purchased this lamp to address a vitamin D deficiency. After two weeks of using it every other day, my symptoms (fatigue, etc) from having a vitamin D level of 18 improved and I was able to return to an active lifestyle. The studies done on this device showed that after 4 weeks, my level should be about 28. You must be at least a skin type 2 for this device.

I strongly recommend that you follow the directions of slowly going from 3 minutes every other day and alternating body areas to the 5 minutes on the 3rd week. Even with following the recommended schedule, I was fine until the 3rd week which gave me painful burns. Before that, I didn't see or feel burning. After a month, I still have light red areas, a burn line across my stomach, and two burn areas that continue to have skin rashes. So, I no longer use it. I don't know if limiting myself to 3 times a week at 3 minutes as opposed to going to 4 minutes every other day would have preventing the burns. Try to limit to 3 times a week and stay at 3 minutes if you feel better at that dose.

The study on KBD's website that was done by Dr. Holick, who wrote "The Vitamin D" solution, showed that 4 minutes for type 2 skin and 5 minutes for type 3 resulted in an average of a 10 point improvement. I noticed improvement with 3 minutes and definite improvement with 4 minutes. Dr. Holick's book mentions 3-5 minutes for a benefit. In summary, be very careful since I found that exposure can cause problems very quickly even if you don't experience prior problems.

I've been using this for about 3 months and have really noticed a difference in my Vitamin D levels. I followed the instructions and have never been burned at all (despite my ability to sunburn even on the foggiest of days within a half an hour!).

The operation is very simple, as it should be. It's a nice size too--fits right on top of our little space.
